A Worth Owning "Hit Or Miss" Tribute Collection.......2001-06-06
The Bee Gees have had many tribute albums dedicated to their great body of work. This is the first one to contain all unknown bands and singers. Electic is a weak word for it. I swear some of the lead vocals are the same person on many of the songs. There is little point in mentioning the unknown's names, however, but some of the interpretations deserve a good listen.
The Bee Gees light-hearted ballad, "Melody Fair" is given a hard edged guitar sound that brings it up to modern times, but seems slightly forced. "The 1st Mistake I Made" has the heart-felt appeal of the original, but the singer mispronounces so many of the words, it's darn embarrasing. "Exit, Stage Right", an early Australian number is a great hard rocker given the respect it deserves, while the heavy handed guitar use given to "How Deep Is Your Love" could not be more misplaced. There are many songs that just seem like first take recordings - lacking enthusiasm or interest.
On an upbeat note, "I Can't See Nobody" and "Indian Gin & Whiskey Dry" are modernized with a fresh, clean sound interpretation. For a wild ride, "Massachusetts" becomes an instrumental ala "Hawaii Five-0" with a "Wipeout" guitar lead. One of the best songs in this set belongs to a Ms. Beri Rhoades (mentioned only because she is the Bee Gees neice), but the 'Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb,Andy Gibb' written song, "I'm Not Wearing Makeup" is the most up-to-date cut on this collection; also the only one never recorded by the Bee Gees.
Some of the songs will move you and others will make you want to move! Eggbert Records warns us they have Version Two in the works, but we'll have to see if Version One catches on.
Not a bad tribute........2000-01-29
I didn't know what to expect with this collection since I had not heard of any of the contributing artists. I was very interested in how these particular songs would be covered since I am a Bee Gees fan from way back. I like all Bee Gees' music, but I especially love their 60's and early 70's songs - which is where this collection draws most of its material from. I must say that most of these covers are true to the original, but each artists adds their own twist on it which makes the disc very enjoyable.
My favorites include Kristian Hoffman's "Lemons Never Forget" which is actually a "blend" (not necessarily a medley) of 3 songs (Lemons Never Forget, Jumbo, and Down To Earth); Dramarama's hard edged Indian Gin and Whiskey Dry; and the Insect Surfers' great 60's "surfin' music" instrumental rendition of Massachusetts.
