Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars LUUUUUUUUUKE! Love Ya Man, And I mean that baby!.......2007-05-19

Steve Lukather, or as his fans call him, Luke, is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, period. If you love guitar you owe it to yourself to get all of his solo albums as well as his work with Los Lobotomys and even El Grupo. This is a whole different thing than Toto. Toto is a great band as well, but that is his more commercial side. You should see him live to really appreciate his amazing talent, it is undeniable. Some of your favorite, well respected, bands have benefited from his guitar work as one of the biggest session guitar players of all time. As well as his guitar work, his voice is one of the best in rock.

5 out of 5 stars Introspective!.......2006-07-25

In Lukather's own words, he was not looking to make a guitar shredding album and if you buy it for that reason you may be disappointed with many of the deliberate mistakes left on tape. Look instead for an album of substance where the guitar is just a part of the overall and muddy grunge sound that showcases the lyrics and you'll know what to expect. Consider it a male menopausal offering from Steve and perhaps the nearest thing to a confessional your likely to hear from him. The mood is the same for most of the album and of all his solo releases it is the most consistent in tone. The songs all have heavy atmosphere and there is a great deal of depth and soul searching on display. In parts almost unbearably painful, manically depressive and yet somehow life affirming. If you're a fortysomething You will appreciate the brutal honesty on display here. The haunting, Tears Of My Own Shame sounds like the older sibling of Wings Of Time, the only TOTO song I can think of that matches the theme of this album. There are some happier moments however with the excellent and upbeat, Reservations To Live. Anyone looking for a TOTO fix will also be pleased with the outstanding anthemic ballad, Open Your Heart To Me. On a personal level, the highlight of the album for me was Hate Everything About You. A lilting Irish melody wrapped around a beautiful solo. All in all, an album with a message. You'll be glad you made the effort to tune in and listen.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant songwriter, superb guitarist - whats not to like.......2006-03-20

I was never a TOTO fan and despite some 700 or so guitar orientated cd's, I had never even looked at STEVE LUKATHER. My loss it seems as this is an awesome cd with excellent songs and some jaw dropping guitar work. Almost every song gets under your skin and the airguitar gets a heavy workout when dancing around the living room while singing the hook laden refrains.
If you like POWER / POP / ROCK, this is a no brainer and is sure to please. I think this has far more substance than any TOTO release I've ever heard, which might be why some TOTO fans don't like this offering. It's their loss.

5 out of 5 stars LUKE - STEVE LUKATHER.......2003-11-16

Steve Lukather's 3rd solo album is, in his own words, "...a bit of a departure...this record is the closest amalgamation of all the different facets of me than anything I have recorded in the past..." LUKE encompasses a variety of catchy tunes, intense flavours, raw sounds and awesome playing; it also features inspired songwriting collaborations with Fee Waybill, Phil Soussan, Randy Goodrum and Rodney Crowell. The record kicks off with the dark, gutsy and driven riff of The real truth. Cool hook, great harmony vocals and a mindblowing guitar solo. My personal favourite is Love the things you hate, another monster groove with Gregg Bissonette and Phil Soussan, enhanced by Luke's own electric sitar performance. Tears of my own shame is Hendrix-esque and Hate everything about you is Dylan-esque; the album also includes Stephen Stills' Bluebird. In addition to vocal, guitar and sitar, Luke plays a variety of vintage keyboards and harmonica which add a spectrum of interesting tones and colours. In addition to contributing his sublime talents to hundreds of top 40 records, Steve Lukather is a musicians' musician. For me, this record is the epithesis of that talent. Get your teeth stuck into this one!
