Customer Reviews:
The beautiful sounds of George.......2006-06-13
Being a young person in that angry teenage stage of life, I have to admit that even I am surprised at how much this beautiful album blows me away each time I hear it. The vocals of Katie and Tyrone Noonan are gentle yet powerful enough to send chills down your spine. Certainly an album worth a chance even if it's not the type of music you usually listen to. It's hard for me to pick a favourite - I love the whole album! So open your mind, put this in your CD player, press play, listen and decide for yourself.
talents unleashed.......2005-08-26
This is the product you get once a group a naturally talented (albeit a tad bohemian) musicians get together and make music.
I discovered this delightful band in Melbourne when I was studying there and found them refreshing and a whole lot more meaningful than the stuff that was out on the charts at the time. What really got me hooked, though, was their live performances (to date, I have been to about 5) and I really think a band is measured by how they perform live.
Both Katie and Tyrone are great singers and can captivate their audiences with their powerful vocals that is supported by 'real' singing taught by their mother, Maggie Noonan, who is an opera singer in Brisbane.
The rest of the band have been playing their respective instruments for many years and this shows both in the record and on stage.
The writing is profound (and yes, it can get political and a bit preachy) and struck chords in me. Another great thing about this album is that there are 2 different tones that run through it. Katie and Tyrone's emotions both play a part in the alternative songs and this is refreshing with every listen of the album from start to finish.
Highly recommended.
Pretentious 'middle of the road' music - Fauxhemian!.......2004-11-05
I simply do not understand why this group is regarded as being so good by some of my compatriots. I bought this album on the recommendation of a friend and I've repeatedly listened to this recording and I remain unmoved. I bet a lot of people have felt the same as me, yet are not willing to admit that this recording is merely sophisticated background music for fear of appearing unhip or unsophisticated! George is 'oh so trendy' and 'hip'!
As I said in the title of this review, George make prententious MOR music - sort of Pop-Lounge stuff. It isn't half as creative musically as the artists or their recording company would have us believe and the album is actually a little tedious.
If you have the Missy Higgins album, and like it, then George is the next step. If you have George's album, and enjoy it, then Ms H may be worth considering. I have to say that I find both of these albums and artists very tedious and jejune.
Wish I still had this CD.......2004-09-01
I loved this album and would still be listening to it if someone hadn't stolen my CD a year ago. It took a while to get used to the different (from most US music) style of George but even now, I still cannot get some of the songs out of my head. I hope and bet that whoever took my cherished CD is enjoying the soothing yet rocking vocals of the band.
Don't be sucked in by the singles.......2004-06-03
I had high hopes for this album based on the (excellent) singles "Release" and "Special Ones", but unfortunately the rest of the album didn't even come close to living up to expectations. I found a lot of it sounded a bit too much like Jeff Buckley, and not being a fan of his I just couldn't get into it. The album is also a lot softer than the singles might lead you to believe - most of the other tracks lack the intensity that those two singles have.
