Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What you're missing.......2006-01-08

Haven't heard the Clout version but have the original by The Righteous Bros. It's vintage R B and well worth the listen if you can find it.

5 out of 5 stars South African all-female seventies disco group.......2004-02-09

Best known for their Europe-wide smash hit Substitute, Clout were a group of five very talented singers and musicians from South Africa. They began as a seventies disco group but later added a hard rock edge to their music.

In Britain, Substitute was their only hit, peaking at number two, although they fared better in mainland Europe, where Substitute reached number one in several countries and they had other chart hits too. Substitute was also recorded by Gloria Gaynor and released as a single in America. I will survive was on the B-side but the single was soon flipped, as a result of which Substitute was only a minor hit for her. This enabled Clout's version to become an American hit but it, too, was only a minor hit although it peaked higher than Gloria's version. Incidentally, the liner notes claim that the Righteous Brothers were the original performers of Substitute but I've never come across their version.

Clout recorded several covers of songs that you might recognize including Eric Clapton's Let it grow. Clodagh Rodgers recorded the original version of Save me but it failed to chart in Britain despite plenty of airplay. Whether Clout's version was released in the UK as a single, I don't know, but it was a hit in some other countries, as were You've got all of me and Under fire.

This fine compilation covering the period from 1978 to 1981 contains all the essentials and much more besides. If you enjoy seventies disco music, you should enjoy this.
