Customer Reviews:
better than Libertine.......2005-10-10
it took me forever to finally get my hands on this album because i had to track down a german import since it was not available in the u.s. when it was first released. once i had listened to it, i was a bit surprised at the change in the styles. i had fallen deeply for Gene's Olympian album, mainly because of the obvious Smiths/Morrissey influence in the band's sound. but this album reveals a more headstrong and bar rocking group that isn't ashamed to flex a bit of muscle in their strut. it took some time to get used to, but once it settled in, i could appreciate this album for what it is.
the english pop elements are still largely in place such as in the songs "In Love With Love" and the moving "Angel." but the pub stomp of "The British Disease" and "Fill Her Up" is where the band really excels in their newfound groove. unfortunately, about halfway through the album, the charm begins to wear thin and Gene presents the listener with a handful of forgettable songs. luckily, they finish of the album with a pretty good ballad "You'll never Walk Again."
overall, Revelations is not a bad album; not bad at all...but one that shows an unrest and a slight confusion in the songwriting process. it pales in comparison to Olympian and Drawn To The Deep End. but there are some moments on here that make it a worthwhile purchase for the fans of this group. (and Revelations is a million times better than the dreadful Libertine record that would follow). ouch.
oh yea...
one more negative thing; what is up with this horrible cover? everyone's faces just smearing in together just doesn't look good. and, let's be honest, shall we? Gene were never really that photogenic of a band. *ahem*
Gene do it again!.......2002-12-29
FANTASTIC! I have loved the band since the good 'ol/bad 'ol days and they continue to impress. "Angel" is one of my favourite tracks but the whole album is superb. My desert island dics collection (Brits will understand this) is now ruled by the band. BUY THIS CD!
Stands the Test of Time.......2001-12-14
I used to consider Revelations the weakest of the three Gene albums released at the time, but last week I had to change my opinion. While I was ripping all my Gene CDs to MP3, I noticed that Revelations was the only album I wanted every track from. Olympian has one or two clunkers, and even the masterful Drawn to the Deep End has two useless tracks. But the version of Revelations I bought has 15 solid, rewarding rock-pop songs. That's a great value. Gene deserves to be much more popular in the states.
Trying to hard to move past The Smiths?.......2001-05-06
Amazon audiences don't like a negative review. Those are the ones that seem to pile up the 'not helpful' votes....but here goes:
I *really* like Gene. Olympian, the rare EP that accompanied that album, and even Drawn to the Deep End were excellent CDs. I was of course turned on by the way Olympian resonated with the ethos of Morrissey's music--more Morrissey than Marr, really, since it updated the sound to a mid-90s British Pop sound that was clearly past the post-punk jangle of Marr's guitars with the Smiths.
So I really like Gene. But I hate this album! It's really a let down and I just haven't bothered listening to it more than 2-3 times. The record company surely recognized this as they did not release the damn thing in the US! It's available only as an import and that hasn't helped their sales.
Now, why did this happen? My guess is the constant, shallow, foolish comparisons to the Smiths. Huh? I mean, I like them because I'm a Smiths fan. If I hated the Smiths, I'm sure I'd find them a lot less appealing. That's true. But the fact that everyone said this--and the fact that much of the 'mainstream' press likes to wallow in words like 'moping', 'miserable', 'depressing' and 'Prozac'--probably started to get to Rossiter et al. That's understandable.
But I guess they tried to change their sound to find a new different 'voice'. This is, of course, a classic error. For one hit wonder bands, this is called the sophomore syndrome, after which no future albums appear.
Can Gene recover? Time's cruel march will tell.
