Hermits, mermaids, and Eros driving a Jag.............2005-08-12

A Miskatonic University graduate of dubious attendance, Simon Finn along with Nick Drake, Robert Damien Youth, Roky Erikson, Bill Fay, Tom Rapp and other dabblers of the genre now deemed "psyche-folk" (call it whatever), all have traversed the borderlands of subconscious Nightmare.

Some have perhaps ventured further than others before they return, and some go in and never come out.
Simon Finn goes in there all right. His rather unadorned guitar and stark vocal delivery serve his dark, disturbing enigmatic lyrics well on MAGIC MOMENTS, his latest outing.

The presentation on MAGIC MOMENTS recalls a contemporary English bard less affected by the pastoral whimsey of Yore, and more focused on the exorcising of his personsonal demons, demons of the Here and Now.
On 12 tracks, 5 are solo acoustic and the other 7 have minimal musical support by Joolie Woods on either flute, recorder or violin. The whole emphasis is always...Simon + Guitar, and the strange, captivating world he presents to his listeners.

This is a very brief cd, total track time is only 32:05 minutes, yet the "songs" reveal a personal fragility/vulnerability in the artist, and show tensions both mystical and perverse.

One favorite of mine is called 'Gypsy Man'(2:30),here's a partial rendering of the lyrics:

'In a rundown room off the Blvd
sat a gypsy and his guitar
Recommended by friends,
yes, one could depend
on a future predicted by Lars.

"Now this Piscean thinks he'll be cured,
in part by words that assure,
And by a pudenda so bold,
with such delectable folds,
That his sex'll be continually lured"

I said "How do I know that you're real, and
not some subconscious yearning revealed?"
He exposed a gold tooth and said
"the source of the truth,makes no odds
if your longings healed."

For in darkness and stars

Who play only to conjure one ghost.'

Like I said, there's something both mystical AND perverse. All the tracks have this sharp, subtle edge. Donovan this is NOT.
