New Zealand's South Island is a grand and gorgeous land that yields marvelous views around nearly every turn in the highway. But one of the things that makes those sights so amazing also renders them desolate--they're bereft of people. It's an empty, empty land. Cry, Alastair Galbraith's fifth album, was recorded in a shed by the mouth of New Zealand's Taieri River, and it evokes equal measures of naturally inspired grandeur and soul-numbing isolation. Galbraith makes extraordinarily beautiful music from extremely limited means; most of the record's 13 tracks are constructed from brief, flickering loops of sounds coaxed from old keyboards, gently plucked guitars, and keening violins. He obtains otherworldly textures by running some of those loops backward and slowing others down. Galbraith's hushed, lilting voice ties it all together by singing and reciting words steeped in anguish and wonder. --Bill Meyer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How many 'best' albums can Galbraith make?.......2000-12-01

Before even bothering to read this, listen to the sound samples that Amazon has on their site...that will tell you a lot more than I ever can. Basically, this is a continuation of what Galbraith was doing on Mirrorwork, but actually enters into the territory of extended instrumentals this time around. If you liked Mirrorwork, purchase immediately. For those who have yet to hear Galbraith's stuff--again, check out the sound samples! With its half rustic folk, half sound experiment, all low-fi approach, Galbraith is one of the most distinctive and accessible voices among todays modern music innovators. This is warm, compassionate and thoughtful music that will spend a lot of time in your CD player. Its only drawback evident to me is its relative brevity (38 minute), but this can be resolved by playing back to back with Mirrorwork.
