10 years in the waiting.......2006-12-15
Flip back to 1996... I was still in high school, enjoying the growing pains and life while bucked up, listening to Swervedriver. Any given weekend consisted of skateboarding or attending some indie concert with my friends. I got introduced to the world of Swervedriver back in the summer of '92 with the most excellent "Duel", released by Creation Records. I still own the cassette recording... doesn't play as good as it did back then in my walkman, but I keep it for liner note worthy. The latter was later purchased digitally and sees a lot of play in my iPod.
When I heard Ejector Seat Reservation was going to be released in '96, I was overwhelmed with joy, when I heard all the nightmarish dealings with the US labels, I grieved. A great band, a great sound, dulled by another big corporation. Then my life changed, I entered college and so forth and Swervedriver was archived as a memory of my teenage years.
Enter 2005. The Swervie motorbike was revved once more with my acquisition of Juggernaut Rides; never before listened to songs, rare b-sides that blew some of the album material and a desire to complete the Swervedriver album collection which ended with 99th Dream and lacked Ejector Seat Reservation.
1. Single Finger Salute: one of my favourite SWD instrumetals along with Duel's "Never Learn". Orchestrated strings along with the trademarked SWD disturbed melancholic sound. What better way to greet a dacade old fan.
2. Bring me the head of the Fortune Teller: Unusually long titled track for a great example of 90's rock. Shoegazers please shoe off! LoL
3. The other Jesus: I love the intro on this song. A nice sequel to the title track "Jesus" on the Last Train to Satansville EP. The good and evil ...internal battle, oh my!
4. Son of Jaguar "E": I expected much more of this song. Feels to me like being on a fair on the merry go around. Perhaps "Son of Mustang Ford" got me all hyped up.
5. I am Superman: my least favourite song of the album. Catchy chorus though. la, la, la, la ,la!
6. Bubbling up: Enjoying it to the max!
7. Ejector Seat Reservation: One of my personal favourite tracks in this album. Try listening to this song while taking off on a plane!!!
8. How does it fell to look like candy?: Great cruising song! I wonder to whom they were referring to in this song.
9. Last day on Earth: What I called a "transition" song into the more melodic 99th Dream. If you like this song you will find more in the track "Mealström" found in the "Last day on Earth" EP.
10. The Birds: I still don't get the context of this song, but still good. Wait for the gem at the end of the song.
Was it worth the wait? Absolutely!!!!
Bring Me The Head (of the Record Label Executives).......2006-10-08
The earlier reviews pretty much said it all; this is pretty much one of THE best and most overlooked bands from the 90s. Swervedriver is lumped into the shoegazer category often, however, if that label scares you off then dismiss its application to this band, because they aren't so much shoegazer - in that cough-syrup-dreamy-noise way - as they are sonic rock. Yes, rock. Who knew it could still be done, and believe me, they do it well, and uniquely. If you've listened to Swervedriver before, then tehre isn't too much more to say - buy this album. It's not as hi-fi as 99th Dream or Mezcal Head (in my opinion their best album and one of the best of 90s decade), but not as fast or dirty as Raise. Now, if you have never listened to Swervedriver, this might not be the best album to start with - it all depends on your tastes. Personally, I would suggest starting with 99th Dream or Mezcal Head; either way, this has all the qualities of every Swervedriver album - great lyrics, superb and unique songs, and that urge for more when it's over. Sadly, this band was vastly ill-treated by labels and they are no longer together (however, some vestiges exist in the form of Toshack Highway). But if you want to see what you missed in the 90s - even more so, if you want to see what the best of the best from that decade truly was - Swervedriver is a must.
The Great Lost Swervedriver Album.......2006-09-08
They'd already mastered blazing sonics over Raise and Mezcal Head, so Swervedriver push into new pop turf (read: less shoegazery, though they always rocked much harder than the rest of that scene) on ESR with astounding success, only to be dropped by their US label just prior to release. Creation released it in Europe but didn't support it one measly whit. Some record store kid had an import stashed under the counter way back when, and for whatever reason saw fit to sell it to me.
Every Swervedriver record is some degree of awesome (well, maybe 99th Dream tops out at "great"), but ESR is the one that'll stand the test of time. They toss some T-Rex and Who into their melange, get more gnarly and direct on a few songs, and uncork a handful of true classics that still boggle the ears all these years later. "Last Day on Earth" and "The Birds" are both stunning combinations of sonic pleasure and chest-expanding emotion. Were I forced at gunpoint to pick one SWD CD, this'd be the one.
A masterpiece from the best band you've never heard of.......2005-12-10
What a shame! This album has everything intact. Stellar songwriting, fantastic production, incredible playing. The Swervies pay homage to those who inspired them. The Who,The Beatles, The Stooges, Burt Bacharach!, to name just a few. Some say that this is a tribute album to the late Kurt Cobain. Maybe!
And the shame is that the record industry overlooked them and this album was never released in the U.S. Their label dropped them!!! All I can say is that if you like sonic Britt rock with a good amount of pop, you should own this record. "The other Jesus","The Birds", "Last Day On Earth",The title track, "How does it Feel to Look Like Candy"....all have a place in the Swervie hall off fame.
"Walking downstairs sideways, vodka sonic proof".......2005-03-03
Swervedriver was my favorite band in the early to mid 1990s. I remember the first time I saw the music video for "Sandblasted" on MTV's 120 Minutes back in 1991. I was hooked by their hypnotic sound and could not get the song out of my head. The next day I went straight to the mall and purchased Raise, Swervedriver's first full-length album. It quickly became my favorite CD that year. Then, in 1993, came Mezcal Head with its more open sound and catchy riffs. Five years later I bought 99th Dream which is my favorite Swervedriver album. At the time, I did not realize there was an Ejector Seat Reservation, which came out three years earlier. It was not released in the United States and, as such, did not get play on MTV's alternative music shows. It was not available on Amazon either and, once I found out it existed, I had to find a CD dealer overseas to get my copy. Well, it was definitely worth the effort and I am glad it is now easily available for a reasonable price on Amazon so more people can check it out.
Ejector Seat Reservation is not quite as solid as 99th Dream or Raise, but it ranks right up there with Mezcal Head far as I'm concerned. The vocals, which were rather flat at times on Raise, get better here as they did with each Swervedriver album. Ejector Seat Reservation begins with the interesting, almost sophisticated instrumental "Single Finger Salute" and then kicks in with the power driving "Bring Me the Head of the Fortune Teller." "The Other Jesus" is my favorite track on the album. It is tremendously catchy with excellent guitar hooks. The dreamy, psychedelic "Son of Jaguar 'E'" is another favorite as well as the accelerating title track that just carries you away. "Last Day on Earth" has a transporting beauty. There are also extra tracks following the ten listed above. Track 11 is a short instrumental. Track 12 is about a minute of silence but track 13 is a decent little song. Nothing too special but, hey, it is a bonus. Some of the lyrical "la la la, da da da" fillers on tracks like "I Am Superman" and "How Does It Feel to Look Like Candy" as well as a couple of weaker tracks keeps me from giving this CD a perfect rating, but the best tracks on here are as amazing as the best material on the other Swervedriver releases.
I was a fan of shoegazer music like Catherine Wheel as well as other "alternative" bands like Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, etc. Swervedriver was always my favorite and I could not understand why they did not hit it big like Blur. Swervedriver was shoegazing with power. They could also put together catchy, radio-friendly tracks. If you like 1990s alternative pop/rock and missed out on Swervedriver, I recommend any of their albums.
