Eddie Angel's DINOSAURS! "GRRRRROWL!!!".......2005-03-11
Known these days for his incredible work with LOS STRAITJACKETS, Eddie Angel gets my vote for one of the world's MOST EXCITING rock guitarists! While so many "big names" and punk posers merely make "noise", Eddie plays with style, finesse, class, POWER, and CRYSTAL-CLARITY. Little of this is noticeable on this disc from the early 90's, however-- but that's NOT a problem.
GUITAR PARTY was recorded at London's Toe Rag Studios with producer Liam Watson, home & master of the "lo-fi" sound. This collection is absolutely incredible! It's FUN! It's EXCITING! It's STRANGE! It's FUNNY! Among the songs are early, cruder versions of "Caveman", "Itchy Chicken" and "Casbah", all redone later (and cleaner) by Los Straitjackets; "Thunder" (earlier by Eddie's rockabilly band The Planet Rockers); covers of "Werewolf" (The Frantics) and "Take It Off" (The Gentiles).
But my FAVORITE songs are "Jurassic Beat" (reportedly featuring the sounds of "real dinosaurs"-- how'd they get them in such a tiny studio?), "Police Raid On Toe Rag" (a novelty song with an English cop intruding with such lines as "You cahn't do that in 'ERE, sunshine!") and "Kawanga". While LS redid this and made it a regular part of their shows, Eddie's original version has it by a mile. Possibly the MOST powerful track on the album, it totally blows my mind every time I hear the part where the saxophone comes in. WHOA!!!
Pretty much the same line-up of musicians later reunited for the 1st Neanderthals album a couple years later, LATEST MENACE TO THE HUMAN RACE, which I give the highest reccomendation to. This is a lot like that-- except without the singing!
