Oh man, what a joy the Zoobombs are. This Japanese quartet approaches rock & roll with such unabashed pleasure and unrestrained naiveté that you can't help but smile outrageously as you hurl your ass around the dance floor. They aren't exactly breaking new ground here, falling somewhere between the blues explosions of Jon Spencer and funk-laced Meters jams, but somehow, someway, they make you feel like you're hearing the music for the very first time. It doesn't matter if you can't understand the language on Let It Bomb (Don sings mostly in his native language, with a few pidgin phrases thrown in); the vernacular of their chops needs no translation. Don's guitar careens wildly, Moo Stop slaps the bass with bloody fingers, Matta urges a funky moan from her organ, and Bukka anchors the whole glorious din with Keith Moon-hopped-on-soul drums. "South Central Rock" and "1-2-3" rock with sloppy punk abandon, "Mo' Funky" and "Soul Bomb" are ass-shaking grooves, "Don's Dream" hits a Velvets-on-painkillers frenzy, and the best cut here, "Bomb the Bomb," is a wild, soulful, rock rave-up. And check out the cover of Spinal Tap's "Gimme Some Money," which makes some kind of strange, wicked sense. --Tod Nelson

Customer Reviews:
rap in japanese just sounds cool.......2001-09-22
i mean it! this is such a funky, fun, outrageous album that i can't listen to it without starting to boogie. even now, i'm singing "everybody wanna bomb ze bomb now!" if you've heard Welcome Back, Zoobombs! then you already know that they can rock, but did you know they could be so funky? the keyboards will make your head bop, the bass will make your rump wiggle, and the vocals will make you sing along as you smile your fool head off. dang, the Japanese know how to love American music so much more than Americans do.
The Bomb is Number One!.......2001-04-11
The follow-up to "Welcome Back, Zoobombs!", this album continues the same unrestrained rock energy with "1-2-3" and "South Central Rock" before breaking into their funkiest number ever - "Mo' Funky" (with an extended dub track!). There's lots of great stuff to follow - but the slower tempo songs like "Pleasure Drop" and "4190" don't have the power of Zoobombs at their best. And while the laughably-bad "Bomb the Bomb" begs not to be taken seriously, don't miss the final track, "Don's Dream," which echos the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" and will remind you that the Zoobombs can rock as hard as the best bands of all time!
