Customer Reviews:
Why bother?.......2005-08-12
This collections gives you 7 of the 8 tracks from the 1985 Power Station album - at that rate, just buy that album. Moreover, it only features one track from the much better 1996 Power Station album 'Living in Fear'.
I'd only recommend getting this if you are really keen on getting the other tracks not found on either album.
But basically you might as well get the first album to get most the songs found here and get Living in Fear to get all the ones missing from here.
I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to..........2004-12-26
First off, let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the original two Power Station albums (The Power Station and the sadly overlooked Living In Fear). Andy & John Taylor of Duran Duran put together a side project that really kicked some ass, and proved once and for all that they really could play. It's dance music, but the most rockin' dance music ever recorded. But, the band only recorded two albums, so a compilation is completely unneccesary, especially since the second album didn't feature any hits (despite the fact that in many ways it featured better songs). So, if you just wanted a collection of hits by this band, then pick up the first album. But this compilation throws in a couple of rare tracks, which would really only appeal to fans of the band. But if you already own the first two albums, then you are spending money really on three songs.
Regardless, if you are fan of Duran Duran or The Power Station, then just wait for the new deluxe edition of the first album. It will feature at least two of the rare tracks from this album (don't know if the live track will be included, but that wouldn't be much of a loss, since it features Michael Des Barres on vocals, because Robert Palmer refused to tour with the band), along with a bonus dvd. And if you're a casual fan of eighties music, you are much better off buying a compilation cd of eighties songs that feature Some Like It Hot or Bang A Gong...since those are the only two songs many people care about anyway.
This really only would appeal to someone who was told that The Power Station were great, and are curious. Other than that, don't waste your money.
Good material, but it just isn't enough.......2004-01-27
In 1985, the five members of Duran Duran temporarily separated into two side-project bands. One of these bands was the Power Station, which featured the legendary Robert Palmer on lead vocals. Although the band didn't score a good deal of hits, they were still an excellent band. In addition to their self-titled album in 1985, the band reunited in 1996 for a reunion album, Living In Fear. Recently, the band got a best of CD in the Ten Best Series. How does it measure up? Read on and find out.
PROS:
-If you're a casual fan and you're just seeking the band's biggest hit, Some Like It Hot, it's here for your listening pleasure.
-There are two excellent cover songs here as well - a cover of the Beatles classic Taxman, and T. Rex's Get It On (Bang A Gong.)
-A number of underrated masterpieces can be found here.
-It's budget-priced.
-Unlike other CDs in the Ten Best series, this one has rare and unreleased recordings.
CONS:
-WAY TOO MUCH emphasis on the first album, not enough on the second one.
-The band only had TWO albums, so a best of album for them is extremely unnecessary. If they wanted to make people by the rare tracks on a best of, why not just make a compilation of rarites and such?
-It doesn't fill the CD to the eighty minute limit.
OVERALL:
GET THE ALBUMS INSTEAD. This compilation might be enough for you if you're a very casual fan, but that's about it. Hits compilations are often scattershot, and this one is even worse since it's a BPC (budget-priced compilation.) I can't stress it enough - buy the albums!
The best of (but only from the 1st album) !.......2003-12-18
The Power Station was a side project for Duran Duran's John & Andy Taylor. Together with the late Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, they formed this supergroup in 1985 and recorded an album which featured 2 US top 10 hits ("Some like it hot" + T-Rex's "Get it on").
Palmer left the Power Station shortly after to go on solo but in 1996, he re-formed the band for a second album "Living in fear" which failed to chart.
This low-budget collection concentrates on the 1st album. The only track from "Living in fear" included here is the cover of George Harrison's "Taxman".
