Dwight Twilley has been hailed as the Godfather of New Wave for putting hook- and riff-fueled rock & roll back on the radio in the mid-1970s with his shimmering debut single, "I'm On Fire." He then scored another big chart success a decade later with the infectious "Girls." And despite hitting the sort of jarring, midcareer record-biz potholes that have flattened lesser artists, the Tulsan motored on, often without the mixed blessings of a record contract. Twilley has earnestly claimed that all he was trying to do was write songs worthy of Lennon-McCartney and sing them like Elvis. Heady rhetoric be damned--he backs his claim with this solid collection of outtakes, demos, and studio oddities, and the songs' consistent quality makes you wonder what was going on between the ears of the A&R execs who rejected some of them. Be they power-pop rockers like "Black Eyes," "Don't You Love Her," and "No Place Like Home" (reminiscent of Tom Petty, an early Twilley Band alum), or the sort of transcendent ballads ("Perfect World," "Lullaby," "Reach for the Sky," "Oh Carrie") that sound like they've always existed, these are songs illuminated by both pop genius and a stubborn, fashion-be-damned devotion to songcraft. --Jerry McCulley
