Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Double the Fun! (And sadness, loss, pain, joy, etc...).......2003-01-07

When I first heard of the nature of the new double cd Grace Braun/DQE project, I was skeptical and thought there was a great chance it would be a disaster. I mean, I have the utmost respect for Braun as a singer/songwriter, but can anyone that's not the Minutemen or Dylan sustain interest over 37 tracks? I figured there would be a bunch of great songs but also alot of filler, and that the best thing she could release would be a briskly compiled one-fer of new material.

How wrong I was. Yes, the names of the 37 tracks sprawl out on the rear insert of this 2 cd set, but that's all that is sprawling. There is nothing to fear here, so the track-ora-phobics among us can calm down. This 2 cd set plays so effortlessly you hardly notice. It reminds me of the first Lord of the Rings, after three hours you were so involved and loving it that it felt like a half hour had gone by when it was over. And you were ready for more! I'm not sure if Grace is going to be doing a 2 cd set for her next album, but who knows?

Both cds are titled "I'm Your Girl," the first disc being styled as a stripped-down, acoustically-minded affair. The second disc is the stark, raving, alt-core lunacy of DQE, brash and outgoing, but bridled by an earnestness that is very appealing upon repeated listens. All I know is, I've been listening to this darned cd just about every day, and humming many of the tracks when I'm not listening to it.

It's in my top 5 albums of the year, along with Impasse by Buckner, YHF by Wilco, Yoshimi by the Lips. It will be a crying shame if this release is considered so "niche" that many people stay away from it. Grace Braun is such a vital songwriter, and like Richard Buckner, is really so vital that she should be commanding far more attention than she is getting.
