Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tribe After Tribe - 'Enchanted Entrance'.......2003-05-05

Not knowing what to expect from South Africa's `Tribe After Tribe' (now L.A based) having being in hibernation for what seems forever I am absolutely blown away.

How the music has evolved from their early days gigging in South Africa to touring with Pearl Jam during the `grunge' pandemic and then disappearing into virtual obscurity.

`Enchanted Entrance' unfolds into a musical storybook magically told using everyday bog standard instruments blended into a kaleidoscope of sounds and effects integrating samples, obscure instruments such as a Nord, Saz, Vina and an array of African percussion instruments.

The opener `100 000' is powerful, fast paced `electro-rock' that has you fooled into believing the rest of the album is the same. As you're swept through `Loud and Clear' and `Island' you can almost taste Africa on a sweltering day as the wind sweeps the dryness through your pores...and realisation sets in that this is an album like no other...

`Eloise' combines the heavier edge with a sultry, provocative feel that can best described as `African grunge'.... feverish....

As this auditory adventure continues, `Drowning Pieces' has one in a rhythmic trance and you cannot but help but feel that you are one with Mother Nature.

`Tabla Rosa' has me up on my feet shuffling to the hypnotic rhythms...... THIS ALBUM IS GODSIZE! " ...i climb up on the roof and dance with you here is the land of the white hot sand the devils bloom in the baboons hand here is the land of hunger slashed deep in the valley where the mamba lashed...where the lightning flashed deep in the valley where the mamba lashed".

Rest assured `Enchanted Entrance' is not for everyone but there can be no denying it this is pure, powerful, passionate musical poetry.

4 out of 5 stars A Much Darker Affair.......2002-11-24

(3.5) This latest Tribe After Tribe album finds Robbie Robb leaving most of the African percussion behind and trading it in for dark, pounding drum sounds, angry guitar, deep bass and swirling electronica. As a result, its a lot less earthy than previous albums, maybe more in character with the deep-sounding reverb-drenched work of Devin Townsend. Robb's strained but distinctive voice is unfortunately buried somewhat in the mix, so his mysterious lyrics are overwhelmed by the textures more often than not, such as on "Merry Round Ago." "Tabla Rosa", with its ominous-sounding Tibetan monk samples and wicked bass work by Joey Vera, is definitely the standout track. Robb has used sequenced tracks effectively on previous Tribe Albums ( such as "Boy" from _Pearls Before Swine_) so the transition, although marked, is not as dramatic or alienating here as it might be for other artists. But some might find the emphasis on texture leaves the album wanting for one or two more strong songs.

(A side note - Although the packaging is pretty nice overall, there are a lot of careless errors with the text therein. The tracks are listed out of order on my copy, with "War Sheik" actually at 4, "Tunguska" at 9 and "Burning"/"Burn" at 10.)
