These Northwest dark horses follow up their colossal (but criminally overlooked) major-label debut, Fast Stories...From Kid Coma, with a cleaner, more user-friendly version of their jagged, impressionistic psychedelia. Where Fast Stories was thick, heavy-handed, and apocalyptic-sounding, Feeling You Up relies more on guitarist/vocalist Robert Roth's epic arrangements and guitar wizardry. Drummer Mark Pickerel (ex-Screaming Trees) and bassist Hiro Yamamoto (ex-Soundgarden) fill up this trio's enormous sound with a burly and precise bottom-end that supports Roth's bold forays. Feeling You Up in many ways sounds similar to its predecessor--Roth's vocal lines and screams ring familiar and the Doors-meet-Sabbath heaviness pervades some of the material. However, in many ways it finds the band being more adventurous, dabbling in hip-hop-like beats and allowing the beauty and strength of Roth's strong songwriting skills to emerge from behind the haze of distortion and bombast that marked much of Fast Stories. Of the few remaining bands still playing the kind of heavy music that put the Northwest on the map, only Truely remain forward-thinking innovators. --Adem Tepedelen

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best EVER...........2000-09-17

The only reason I give this record 4 stars is because it would make Fast Stories....From Kid Coma, released June 1995(on Capitol Records who, unfortunately, released the first Foo Fighters record around the same time and threw tons more promo behind it), seem not as outstanding. Feeling You Up is a record that any pop music fan would enjoy, a wide range of sounds, a short rip into the Great Northwest from a group not pressured by the demands, for better or worse, of deadlines, selling quotas and popular opinion. It is right to call Truly a Seattle supergroup, but not simply because of past affiliations. Tracks like "Feeling You Up", a stormy night head-nodder, or "Air Raid" a catchy pop tune that grows with each listen, indicate the sophistication and musical creativity that Seattle produces in spite of the Grunge albatross. "Queen Blip City" is the finale, and perhaps my fav, and the jangly guitar and droning vocals reminds one of previous releases like "So Strange" or, the 1991 subpop release that started it all "Heart and Lungs." For you indie afficionadoes, head to the wax pusher and find any Truly you can, especially the "Blue Flame Ford" 10". Blue and yellow vinyl, that one. Get felt up.
