Michael Bruce - 'In My Own Way-The Complete Sessions' (Pilot).......2006-10-11
As most of you know,of course Michael Bruce was the guitarist and key songwriter for the original Alice Cooper Group from 1969-73.'In My Own Way' is apparently his 1974 unreleased album that was talked about in several late '70's Alice/Billion Dollar Babies interviews in Circus Magazine and I believe Rolling Stone.Best described as midtempo straight-ahead all American rock&roll.Disc one is the original lp,with four(4) added bonus cuts.Must admit this CD starts out a bit boring, however by track number three, which is Bruce's cover of the Easybeat's smash hit "Friday On My Mind",this CD reissue really takes off. Also were sort of taken away with the well written title track "In My Own Way",the rocking "As Rock Rolls On"(with guest vocalist, none other than Alice),"So Far So Good",the beautifully played "Seems Like I Only Fool Myself" and the familiar-sounding "Morning Song".Well done.Disc two is a collection of unreleased demos and out-takes.Comes with a 12-page booklet that features an informative interview.A should-have.
I think you're gonna like it..........2003-07-11
I've owned this recording on vinyl (polydor germany release) for over 20 years, even though everything I read about it indicates it was never actually released back then. I always enjoyed the record, so to have
it released on CD and remastered with 22 bonus tracks is fantastic.
I'm a big fan of the original Alice Cooper group, but don't expect to find much of a connection to that
music here. This is much closer to George Harrison's `All things must pass' album, than early AC.
The song `In my own way' is excellent, as is `If the sky should fall'. A faithful cover of Slade's
`So far so good', who's lyrics Michael obviously felt a connection to at the time is welcome, as is
the psychedelic vibe of `Seems like I only fool myself'. Alice himself sings on `As rock rolls on',
which is the closest the CD gets to the Alice Cooper group sound.
All in all, if you are a fan of Michael Bruce's songwriting, I'm sure you'll like this CD if you give
it a chance.
my personal feelings abou this cd, are as follows:.......2002-10-15
Man ill just start off by saying, that this cd is nothing less than brillant. From begining to end, every song is beautifull, each with its own story to tell, and michael just keeps out doing himself. If your an alice cooper fan such as myself, than michael's creative writing, should not come as a suprise to you. After all he was the musical backbone, to the ol A.C. group.Ive been listening to him for about 20 years now, and will keep doing so untill the day i dye, because his style just strikes a chord with me deep.I recieved the cd 7-26-02, and i have been listening to it everyday after work, since then(10-14-02).I just cant keep the songs out of my head. This is one of those albums, that you listen to, and each song is just as good if not better than the last one you just heard.I would have to say that my favorite songs are, well hell all of them. so if your thinking about buying the cd's i would ask why are you wasting your time reading this, the longer you wait to order it, the longer it takes you to get it.so go ahead and lay your money down you wont be dissapointed. you'll see.
IT'S ABOUT TIME!.......2002-05-12
As a good friend of Michael Bruce's, I can tell you that he waited a long time to find a record label that could fulfill his vision and correctly put this out. NMC Music Ltd. did just that! A polished looking double CD, with photos and a new interview by Jon Kirkman done just for this release.
Disk one, the original "In My Own Way" album. If you have the CD One Way Records released of this not so long ago, listening to this will make you forget all about that one. This CD sounds bright, and clear. The way Michael intended it to be.
The bonus tracks, labeled "First Session 1974 produced by Jack Douglas" are four songs that Michael recorded with Bob Dolin and Mick Mashbir. My favorite? Out of the four, the alternate version of "Rock Rolls On". Best heard when played loud. The song just smokes! If you ask me, worth the price of the CD all by itself.
The second disk, "1974 Lake Tahoe SUNBURST Recordings" has seventeen tracks. Unreleased songs. Demos. Alternate versions & lyrics. I have my favorites; "I Kicked Da Blues" and "No-One Knows The Stranger".
Hard to compare this to the Alice Cooper Group music. True statement. Some ACG fans did just that when they first heard "In My Own Way", and ended up being disappointed because it's not "Killer - Part Two". Wrong way to go about this. Matter of fact in Michael's book, "No More Mr. Nice Guy - The Inside Story Of The Alice Cooper Group", MB has this to say about the subject:
"A lot of people wondered why I hadn't done more of the Cooper style thing. But that was the whole point of doing it. At the time I was trying to get away from the Cooper stuff because we'd been doing that night and day for so long. The idea wasn't that this was to be my solo album and the end of the Cooper career - it was supposed to be in addition to it."
