Project M-13's string of sonic collages is quite different from the soothing, finely crafted soundscapes associated with ambient music. This collaboration has an appealingly rough-hewn quality. Tracks don't necessarily go anywhere in particular, but it's fun to follow the musical wanderings of Milk Cult and their associates. Hip-hop beats, birdsong, hard-rock riffing, turntable scratching, and dog barks are just a few of the elements that make up this CD's aural fabric. Vocals pop up here and there on the album. Like the instrumental textures, they vary widely, and include lovely, wordless singing, distorted, raplike utterances, and emotive recitation. Works like Project M-13 occupy an interesting place in contemporary music. Too harsh to take a sonic bath in and too amorphous to provide structural niceties, the disc offers up pleasure in the form of sound for sound's sake. Call it roughed-up ambient or musique concrete à la pop. --Fred Cisterna

5 out of 5 stars Off The Beaten Path, Yet Highly Accessible.......2003-12-07

This is Milk Cult's masterpiece. The second installment could come out within the next year or two. If you've already heard this cd then you are surely excited about this news. This is one of the absolute best records released in '00. Milk Cult are members of ex- noise rock bay area band Steele pole Bathtub. But this stuff is totally unlike SPBT stuff.
Project M-13 was funded by the French government. Milk Cult collaborated with many different musicians from around the world, never actually recording at the same time with them. The other musician's input is taken and employed into songs the Milk Cult construct. If you are a fan of experimental rock/ electro, or a non- experimental fan, you will most likely love this cd. This cd is mostly only known in knowledgable music circles, a perfect album to buy and impress all your dim witted friends. It is definitely one of my favorite cd's of all time. I could keep writing about how good this is, but I'll just leave it up to you to check it out.
