Customer Reviews:
Fine combination of drone & texture, soft & restless.......2006-04-11
I did not know this is "LIVE," as Amazon classifies it, but it does move wonderfully. I had sampled bits here of the album and band, and I admit that they do not do justice to the epic quality that resists easy snipping into 30-second bites. I heard this for the first time paired together with "Also Rising" by Subarachnoid Space [also reviewed by me]--battle of the strange band names on Strange Attractors label?--and these two merge perfectly. Both bands feature no vocals, a strong base in gradually cresting and ebbing songs that take their time getting to wherever they're going. The ride, not the arrival at the destination, matters most here. Somewhat droning more than overtly psychedelic in the obvious sense, this drills deep into the subconscious to make its effect truly felt.
Therefore, this works well as music to think by, work by, or drive by--this is meant as a compliment. It sets up a trancelike state but neither turns flaccid nor watery. There's plenty of solid ground beneath the musical waves and it fills whatever space you play it in. With no lyrics, but a sort of libretto, you can make your own mental picture to accompany the story played rather than sung. Intelligently arranged, well played and recorded, and thoughtfully sequenced, this is a fine album that came at me from left field, and proved richly satisfying.
Wow.......2005-01-08
The awkwardly titled band, Surface of Eceyon, are modern day masters of ambient rock. They are fast building a small yet strong fan base. Their music is spiritual and ethereal, without being pretentious. Very refreshing and, at times, epic stuff. Most of the album doesn't rock very hard, instead focusing on pure ambient rock. However, a full blast of sonic stun guitar is unleashed on the final 10 minutes of the final track, which seems to be a meditation on freeing music from the grasp of greedy major labels. Well, it also ties in with the weird hippie story included in the inside cover, something about a monolithic monster named the Tusyaan who takes music from the world and who must be defeated by dragons (or something).
