Decent, but not noteworthy progressive metal album.......2006-12-20
First thing's first - NovAct's vocalist is not bad at all. Maybe all of the complaints come from people who expect soaring vocals or Dickinson style wailing, because you definitely won't find that on Tales from the Soul. That doesn't make the guy a bad singer though. He's got a nice midrange voice that fans of Nightingale and Vanishing Point should find appealing.
As to the album itself - I'm sure Tales from the Soul is a perfectly decent progressive metal album, but that just isn't enough for me anymore. Maybe I'm just burned out on the genre after years of buying just about anything with the InsideOut logo, but for a prog metal act to really move me it has to be a pretty spectacular band (see Pain of Salvation, Vanden Plas, Evergrey, and more recently Circus Maximus and Vanishing Point). NovAct just isn't thrilling me like those bands do. The musicianship is at a high level, and I already mentioned the vocals, but I don't see anything that would set this band apart from the rest of the pack.
If you have a real love for all things progressive metal, then by all means check out Tales from the Soul. If you're looking for something noteworthy or special, you may want to keep looking. (Typing Vanishing Point in the search engine would be a great way to start!)
This gets better and better!.......2006-05-23
I bought this cd one year ago. At first I thought it was just ok, but nothing special. After some time it started to find its way into my brain and ever since has been one of the very best cd's I've bought in a very long time. I still listen to it almost daily. The music is VERY powerful in a melodic way. The songs have a lot of "dark" energy. The music, the singing, the lyrics: all hang beautifully together. The music reminds me of Rush in the 1980's, but the vocals and the lyrics are unlike any other band. The lyrics are timely and intelligent, not the usual mythology or intractable hippie stuff. The singing is emotional and somehow full of anger and anxiety in a positive way! (well it's difficult to describe, you'll have to hear it yourself!).
If you like Symphony X, Arena, RPWL, Kino, Marillion, Rush, Nightwish, and other melodic prog/heavy, you'll LOVE this one! This is NOT Sharply Condemned (as some of the reviews seem to suggest) - this is Highly Recommended!
A pleasant surprise.......2005-08-11
A great album with haunting melodies and smart lyrics awaits you if you give this new band a chance.
This is not your typical progressve rock/ metal album with traditional way of handling vocals/harmonies. The band really pushes the envelope in terms of showing how to write and play not so technically sophisticated, yet dark, catchy and even radio friendly songs incorporating some of that modern sound, while staying true to their progressive metal's roots.
Yes, the vocals take a little time (just a few spins) to get used to, but if you are patient enough, you will be rewarded as the singer will get under your skin with his emotional way of singing. He does have a unique style and it fits the music perfectly.
Highly recommended!
This CD is good!.......2005-07-27
I guess this is a a love it or hate it type of album but i am firmly in the LOVE IT group! This band has its own unique sound. Definitlely a dark metal type of prog music. I listened to the clips from the band's website first. These are strong songs. The band did a good job creating unique songs, they don't sound the same like some groups. What does this band sound like....Some Fates Warning, maybe some Queensryche thrown in but overall just good music that any fan of this genre should enjoy. Do not be fooled by these 1 star reviews, they are an injustice.
