Customer Reviews:
nothing like it...........2007-05-05
well I guess the closest thing would be the previous album, "Hold your...," but I don't think I like that one any better than this. I played Hella for my Dad and he asked me when they stop "warming up"....If I were a dentist, I think I'd have Hella playing in the background, it's really nice to unwind to. One of the reviews said it was like torture...I agree, its very nice though.
too much of a talent in your face........2007-03-07
this album is basically..drums and guitar playing the same thing in every song.......its like torture.real fast drumming accompanied by guitar accords.not that good.
Hella annoying.......2005-12-24
I just don't see the big hellabaloo with dis album. They can play I guess but I long for the days when a band could not only play their instruments but write songs as well. Oh, one more gripe; the keyboards are a bit too sweet on occasion.
Minus half a star.......2005-03-20
While I haven't yet heard other releases by Hella, this is an epochal record by anyone's standards. Though the electronica-oriented compositions, while entertaining in their own right, will undoubtedly tie the record to its era in the years to come, the astonishing ambition and dexterity of the guitars/drums compositions will help the instrumental "math-rock" genre to be taken more seriously, not only as an entity separate from the post-rock milieu, but as a movement in the modern avant-garde. This review may or may not be an overstatement: you'll just have to hear the record.
Sophmore album syndrome.......2004-09-19
The worst 'new album let down' since Metallica put out the black album, the Page and Plant albums, or even Smashing Pumpkins' Adore. The elements that made Hold Your Horse Is so excellent are almost completely missing on 7 of these tracks. Sounds like the guitarist ran out of ideas and decided to make up for it by cranking the distortion.
While it is still a thousand times better than anything Nu or MTV, if you heard Hold Your Horse Is and are looking for more of the same, forget it. This sounds closer to the noisy ep's in between lp's.
