Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, but authentic nonetheless, and mystifyingly obscure.......2004-01-21

This is one of those records that I pull out every six months or so. Every time I do, I ask myself the same question: how could this guy have been so overlooked? It really isn't fair, considering he played electric guitar with as much passion and balls as Hound Dog Taylor, acoustic as well (or better, IMO) than Chris Whitley, wrote songs that shoulda/coulda been hits, and had a unique sound. I'll never understand it.

He wrote the sort of lyrics that sounded familiar the first time you hear them: straight forward, no nonsense, economical. It's pretty interesting, particularly on this album, hearing Ptácek's compositions next his interpretations of classics like Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy" -- there's no sense that his own stuff is any weaker. I dunno...

This is well worth the investment just as a good disc to listen to, maybe to cop a few guitar licks from, or even just for dancing. And be sure to check out "Worried Mind" for a mellower but just as intense set of solo acoustic stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Very underappreciated blues.......2003-09-30

Rainer Ptacek was a very approachable, unassuming man. He spent his days working on guitars in the basement of the Chicago Store in Tucson, Arizona. Nothing in his personality would lead you to believe that he was possessed of immense talent as a blues singer and guitarist. He was uterly without pretense. So was his music. This album provides a glimpse of his extraordinary ability.

The album covers a great deal of ground, blues-wise, from Robert Johnson to original compositions. The quality of his guitar playing (on a National steel guitar, I believe)is of the highest. His somewhat quirky voice is not the greatest you've ever heard but, like Dylan's, no other voice will quite do. It's a perfect, soulful fit.
