Customer Reviews:
Fantastic SACD.......2006-06-05
This was never advertised as a multi-channel SACD and I am glad that they didn't try to reformat it. The definitive edition of Peter Gabriel's work is all on SACD now and are must-haves for any fan with an SACD player. What many people do not realize about SACD is that the sampling rate is 2.8 MILLION samples-per-second as opposed to a normal CD which is only 44.1 THOUSAND sps. It is as close to an analog stream that you can get.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you don't have a good ear for audio and a good stereo system to listen to high-definition audio on then obviously you will not hear the difference. But for Audiophiles? A dream come true.
Bill Bennett is an idiot.
If your equipment is right, you will love the fullness of this recording.......2005-11-02
Do not listen to Bill Bennett's reviews of Peter Gabriel's re-released SACD albums. The albums come close to matching the bit rate of the original analogue studio masters, this cannot be done with regular CDs.
If you don't appreciate the difference in sound on this disc then perhaps you do not have the right equipment ot play it. It's one thing to have an SACD player, but do you have a good receiver, good cables and good speakers?
I listened to So and Us on Paradigm Monitor 11 speakers with a Pionner DV-45 DVD Audio/SACD player, Pioneer VSX-1014TX receiver and Excelsior 2.4 speaker cables. It had me in goosebumps.
It's nice to hear a great 5.1 mix, but when you have the right equipment you will garner a whole new appreciation for two channel music. When I close my eyes I could swear that my entire 7.1 system was blasting away, but it's only my two Paradigm speakers.
If you're going to get serious about audio, then you'll start to appreciate stereo SACD discs and Advanced Resolution Stereo DVD-Audio discs using 24-bit/192Hz audio.
If you don't have a tear in your eye by the end of Love To Be Loved listening to it with this rich sound, you're not of this Earth.
I love using my Neo:6 processor for a surround field, but since I added my new speakers I'm hearing my old CDs, DVD-A's and SACDs in a whole new light just listening to them in Direct Stereo (CDs) or Multi-Channel In (SACD/DVD-Audio)
Disappointed.......2005-02-01
The US album is awesome but I was very disappointed in this SACD version mixed in Stereo only. Having already purchased the Remastered version there is nothing with this edition to consider it an upgrade. I had already decided to avoid stereo only SACD but I didn't study the packaging before I grabbed "US" along with "Shaking The Tree". My SACD player creats a "virtual" surround mix from the standard stereo edition which sounds much better then this Mutilchannel stereo mix.
Pick up the "Play" DVD for the 5.1 Surround mixes and turn the picture off. ( or not )
Don't get ripped off!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-20
This is just a re-hash of the stereo CD, it's not "re-mastered" for multi-channel playback. You'd be much happier with Pink Floyd's 30th Anniversary Edition of the album "Dark SIde Of The Moon" or the Eagles "Hotel California" or Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"; these artists took the time and spent the money to do SACD right. Peter Gabriel is just trying to suck more money out of your pocket without any value added in return. Sure it's a slightly better recording than the original CD but certainly not worth buying again.
This CD was made for "US".......2004-05-13
Six years after the 1986 commercial breakthrough SO, Gabriel returned in 1992 with the follow-up album US. This album unlike SO is brighter and has a lot more worldly sounds than SO. The theme of this album is alot like Phil Collins underrated album Both Sides which came out the following year after this one. The thing that in my opinion makes US a little better than Both Sides is that while US has very similar themes to Both Sides, US has warmth and a bit more depth where as while Both Sides is also an amazing album it sometimes is a bit cold and dreary in atmosphere.
Enought about the US vs. Both Sides ranting. This 1992 album while it is generally melancholy in sound it has it's share of humor. US finds Pete embracing the colorful worldly African sounds but not forgetting his rock roots. Steam was the big hit off this CD and with a video that in my opinion surpasses it's companion video Sledgehammer by a hair mainly because of the more cutting-edge technology. Steam is alot like Sledgehammer with lots of the trumpets, humor, creativity, and sex appeal. However on the flip side there are some very melancholy tunes like the gentle Washing Of The Water and the eerie 14 Black Paintings which I consider to be the echoing effects of Passion. Overall though, this CD isn't very dark and is actually quite joyous in spite of it's moody content. The album closes with the warmth and joyous atmosphere of the final track Secret World. Love To Be Loved is absolutely gorgeous with a very dramatic melody not all that dissimilar to Red Rain although maybe not as intense. Overall in fact, I think that US is actually brighter and less ominous than SO and while I think UP is a bit more consistent, US has some warmth, and joy that is mostly missing off that dark masterpiece.
This album was very well produced but the remastering improves it and brings out more dimensional details in the music, especially on Digging In The Dirt, and Washing Of The Water. In fact, it's so well improved in the remastering that it almost feels like a new Peter Gabriel album.
The limited edition digipak that the remastered edition was packaged in, is inferior to the older jewelcase cover. The digipak is mostly made of some kind of cardboard paper and there is little if any difference in the liner notes between the limited digipak and the regular clear jewel case. Also what's wrong is that when the hinge in digipak breaks, there's no way to replace it like a regular CD jewelcase. I have no idea why they still release CDs with this idiotic packaging design nor do I see any appeal in the flimsy design of the digipak.
Sadly, there aren't any bonus tracks included on here. I would've been more than happy to hear the hidden gems that Gabriel recorded but did not put on the album. It also would've been better to hear outtake or alternate demos of the songs. In fact, I think the limited edition should've done that, have bonus material included. Geffen should've looked at Tears For Fears first three albums being re-issued with the bonus tracks and liner notes. Unfortunately, there aren't liner notes telling about the history of the albums making either.
