Album Description

Hot on the heels of their triumph at the 2004 Tuis, where they battled scallywag skate-boppers Steriogram for the best dressed rock band and won, suavely be-suited rockers Dimmer have more good news for their seven and a half thousand fans and family pets nationwide. 'Finality' is the bittersweet closer to Dimmer's superb album, You've Got To Hear The Music. A widescreen tearjerker co-starring Shayne and Anika Moa's vocals joining in pure heartache against the most minimal of instrumental figures in the background, this one closes the door gently but firmly on relationships that have carried far too much weight to bear. Festival/Mushroom. 2004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good original album, but not flawless.......2006-08-26

This is an impressive album by Shayne Carter and Dimmer and being a massive fan of his previous band the Straitjacket Fits I keenly waited to give it a lesson. It starts well with the sexy funk of Come Here, and the albums best track follows Backwards is Backwards. This funk/soul like it should be, back by an inventive groove and great lyrics. Another outstanding track follows Getting What You Give, a smooth but imaginative funk/soul track. Whilst Dimmer has a funk/soul influence the music is a lot more trippy and acidic than most music of that genre and definitely isnt straight funk or soul. the fourth track the only one that matters keeps up the quality, with great use of acoustic guitar and strings. The fifth track Special Case is a brooding pop song which is also good. From there the quality lowers slightly with Lucky One and Happening which are good songs but not as compelling as the first 4 tracks. However, another really good tune follows Searching which features a great driving distorted bass line and seductive female backing vocals. I was lucky enough to see this song performed live and it was pretty mindblowing live. This was before I bought this album so the fact I remembered it points to its greatness. The 10th track Concentration is a good wistful song which evokes New Zealand very strongly for whatever reason. The final track is called Finality (funnily enough) which is my least favourite track on the album which frankly I don't like. However, other reviewers have praised it so you may like it,but I found the tune, the vocal delivery and especially the lyrics which i found banal to be annoying ie "That's how it's gotta be, Finality" Having said that overall it is a very good album full of impressive, imaginative textures and songwriting which preserves Shayne's Carter's place as one of the best music artists New Zealadn has ever produced. There is a shortage of this kind of music on mainstream radio presently. Additionally if you want to be really amazed check out Carter's old band The Straijacket Fits whose best of comp and albums are available on amazon.com
