Album Description
2002 reissue of the British garage rock revivalist's 1986 album for Stiff Records' 54321 Countdown affiliate. The Prisoners got their start in the same Medway River delta area of Britain as Billy Childish's Pop Rivets. After the band's demise singer/guitarist/songwriter Graham Day went on to join Childish's Thee Mighty Caesars & eventually formed the Prime Movers, organist James 'Jamie' Taylor went on to form The James Taylor Quartet. Includes five bonus tracks, 'Whenever I'm Gone', 'Promised Land', 'Gravedigger', 'Pop Star Party' & 'Happiness For Once'. Big Beat.
Customer Reviews:
This is where it all began...with Thee Prisoners!.......2005-04-19
If you ever were curious about were today's wave of Euro & American Post-Garage bands got their influences, I believe most will almost forget but in the last second would admit this British quartet from Medway Delta are the ones that inspire the sound of today. American Bands like the White Stripes, The Killers to Euro bands like Coldplay, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene. Even in the late 80's Manchester bands like The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets and The Charlatans UK all owe it to The Prisoners. Graham Day is got to be one of the most Gifted songwriters, Guitarist & vocalists of at least 30 years. I can never grow old of the music & though this album, "In From The Cold" might not be as strong as the earlier records, it still maintains a sound the resonates what is again captured in the post garage - mod scene of today:LowFi sound, great songwriting, thrusting & raw sounding guitars & heavy hammond organ that brings the true nature of what rock & roll should be. My Favorite song from this CD is "Mourn My Health" great stuff! Though this band split after this album, Graham later grouped with Medway buddy, Billy Childish to form Thee Might Caesars. After a few albums, Graham formed with members of The Prisoners, and formed The Prime Movers - which was a ever more raw & heavier sound of The Prisoners. Then from The Prime Movers ashes, came The Solarflares and made 5 albums until they just recently disbanded. Currently, Graham Day has hooked back with Billy Childish's band The Buff Medways which performed recently in a Southern California music fest with headliner, Lou Reed. I really recommend The Prisoners for all alternative/garage/mod/punkrocker fans. Enjoy!
