3 out of 5 stars This rock ballad has seriously been overplayed.......2004-08-28

Hoobastank's "The Reason"---the only song of theirs I've yet heard---is really a touching rock ballad. I honestly loved it the first time I heard it (via catching a glimpse of its music video on MTV)---I had never heard something sound so passionate. It snuck right past my macho defenses and pierced me emotionally.

At least, that was what happened the first time I heard the song. But then I heard it over and over and over again secondhand on, particularly, Z100 (New York's so-called "No. 1 hit music station"). And a funny though perhaps inevitable thing happened: I got real sick of this song. Whenever it popped up on the radio, instead of being moved all over again, I was irritated more and more by its diffuse rock sound. Did the members of Hoobastank really have to lay on the guitars in such a manner? Something more intimate-sounding would really have been more appropriate, maybe even more profound, instead of this mushy bombast. Now, I've pretty much lost all interest in listening to more Hoobastank.

I have a feeling this wouldn't be the first time a Top 40 radio station has killed the effect of a song by playing it over and over again. And yet, perhaps this reaction is merely a statement about the song itself. A great song would arguably be more effective upon repeated hearings. (I find this very true for Coldplay.) Hoobastank's "The Reason," for me, is not. Therefore, despite my initial favorable reaction to it, this is, simply put, not a great song. Its overblown sentimentality, while impressive the first time, gets old and even nauseating rather quickly. Perhaps the full album, also called THE REASON, from which this song is culled is a greater achievement overall. If you are interested in exploring more Hoobastank, I would recommend purchasing the album instead of this CD single, which may or may not represent the band at its best. I would like to think that it doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars This song rocks for real!.......2004-08-10

I was not a fan of Hoobastank or even of the genre, but I heard 'The Reason' one day, and it was like an epiphany of some sort. I mean I didn't just hear the music, but felt it, and the lyrics are so on-point. This joint is so hot right now!!! I am loving it!

Hoobastank, you have a new fan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why this CD rocks.......2004-07-19

This cd is awsome because reason is its hit song. Of course the reason is an awsome song. An awsome song can make people buy the whole cd and listen to that one song. So the record company that owns hoobastank is going to be rolling in the doe!
