Derivative yet it still moderately works!.......2006-04-28
The Nixon's Latest Thing isn't Foma or Their self titled album. They were never the most original band in the world. Despite having a lack for creativity, they can play some rockin songs with a nice sense of pop sensibility. Zack Malloy's vocals are more than exceptional even though he imitates virtually every vocal style in grunge. The Latest Thing is an improvement over the overly depressing Nixons, but not nearly as good as Foma. The album shines in their catchier tracks with their sense of pop melodies. Their best song include Nobody 101 (Matchbox 20), Lifeline (Our Lady Peace), Blackout (The Cars), and The One. The One sounds like it could had appeared on either of their last albums. They definiely borrow from others, but they make it work. The album suffers from banal and sappy ballads like Don't Cry, Sacred Heart. There are a few passable songs along the way. Get this CD if you are curious about what the Nixons had been up to since Foma. Otherwise get it cheap or don't bother, it is not essential.
If your not looking backwards you'll love it.......2003-04-26

Latest Thing Is The Greatest Thing.......2001-08-30
Don't let this one sneak by!
From the opening track "The One", to the ending "Last Song", the Nixons deliver their best effort.
Even the CD cover is too cool!
The Nixons take a different direction with "The Latest Thing" than their previous "foma" disc. "Latest Thing" is not as heavy, and is similar to Matchbox 20's "Yourself Or Someone Like You." While "Black Out" pays hommage to Tom Petty, Gene Simmons and The Cars ;"Drama Queen", "First Trip", and "Lifeline" are pure pop masterpieces! "Sacred Heart" is perhaps their best ballad, yes even better than "Sister" and "passion".
My personal favorite is "Calling Yesterday." A song of trying to recapture lost youth with the line "come and save us with tomorrow." For those who are Nixon fans, don't expect another "foma". Instead, expect the Greatest Thing with this Latest Thing.
This CD is great........2000-12-22
I bought this c.d to hear about the nixons before i went to a festival for a local radio stations. I had heard the Nixons song "Sister" on the radio a few years ago and it is one of my favorite songs but that was all that I had heard from this band. I put the c.d in and was shocked. The first track The One was excellent. There are nothimg but great tracks after that too. After buying this c.d. I probably listen to it more than any other c.d that i own and the nixons are one of my favorite bands. Inspired by this c.d i went out and bought a couple other of their c.d's including Foma which contains "sister" these are great c.ds also but i would definately reccomend that you purchase this one first. Oh and by the way if you get a chance see them live in concert. they were great.
They only get better........2000-12-22
I've listened to The Nixons for, oh, going on almost eight years now or so. "Halo" was the first CD I bought, and it was great. A real raw sound and feel. "Foma" came out after that, and it was really just a more slickly produced version of "Halo," but with a few different songs. Yet, still, it was a good CD, especially the song Passion. Then came their self titled CD. I *loved* that album. It had a real range on it, going back and forth from hard to soft, with several stellar songs on it, chiefly The Fall, which brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it. After that I didn't hear much from them. Radio airplay was practically nonexistant. Several years passed by with nothing. And then came "Latest Thing."
To tell the truth, I was hesitant to buy it. Usually bands go downhill fast after they've been out of rotation for awhile, and I thought it would be hard to top the last one. But, knowing I had to give it a shot, I bought "Latest Thing." And sadly, at first, I didn't like it. Yeah, the songs were good, but nothing jumped out at me. I would listen to a song or two and then pop it out for some other CD.
