Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Captain Beefheart: Unconditionally Guaranteed.......2007-04-21

The cover of Unconditionally Guaranteed says "100% Pure and Good." I might have to take umbrage with that. I'm not a Captain Beefheart die-hard -- I still haven't even heard Doc at the Radar Station -- but I have been getting quite into the Captain for the last couple of months. I listened to the sound samples on this CD, and I thought it would be really fun to hear the Magic Band play some simple, feel-good, conventional rock-and-roll/soul music. Well, it is. Overall it's an enjoyable 31 minutes of background music; but background music is hardly what the Magic Band is known for! Most Magic Band music flies over the head of 99% of people even when they sitting bolt upright paying attention to every note.

Don't get me wrong, there are some definite highlights to the album: check the Captain's harp playing on "Full Moon, Hot Sun." But overall, the album is weak. The lyrics are incredibly inane (and when they're coming from a great humorous lyricist like CB, the disappointingness of this is multiplied); the Captain's singing is unbelievably weak, he sounds half asleep throughout the album; and the songs are WAY too short (many of them under 3 minutes). Unconditionally Guaranteed stinks of contractual obligation--perhaps that's where they got the inspiration for the legalese album title, and the reason that they put a picture of Don Van Vliet clutching dollar bills on the album cover. Overall, it's just very disappointing to see such utterly average stuff coming from such utterly standout artists as comprise CB & the MB. If this album is really guaranteed, I think I want my money back. Two and a half stars.

4 out of 5 stars i love this album.......2006-07-07

why would anybody knock this album? Sure, it's not Captain beefheart at his most bizarre, but it sure is musical. He was trying to be more commercially accessible at this point in his career, but who cares? This is a great CD.

4 out of 5 stars The Good Captain.......2006-04-18

What I love about "Unconditionally Guaranteed" is that Beefheart shows he can do convincing love songs. (Could Barry Manilow do Trout Mask Replica?) The title is obviously a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that his music is normally anything but commercial. This album is shocking because it features tuneful songs that really connect ("This kiss is for the first time") from someone whom you usually associate with musical Surrealism. It's like Dali got all sentimental on you (as he did from time to time, about Gala.) I'm a Beefheart fan since 1969, and I caught the Magic Band in London in 1975; I love this guy, and I think he's on a par with the Greats. If you don't get UG, the joke might be on you. However, I have to admit my fave Beefheart album is still Strictly Personal (bread dog ear).

4 out of 5 stars Full Moon Hot Sun !.......2006-01-24

Definietly not his best work ,but I really dig this album. The return of guitar wiz ,Alex St.Claire, teamed with Zoot Horn Rollo make this an enjoyable listen even if it is a little contrived. Full Moon Hot Sun is wicked track that will get stuck in your head for days.
