Moth's major-label debut eschews pretentiousness in favor of intelligent lyrics set to effervescent melodic rock. Mixing acoustic and electric passages and loud-and-soft dynamics with fluidity reminiscent of the Replacements' Tim, the album's ecstatic tone never relents. The opening track, "I See Sound," is a stirring romp alternating crashing choruses, quieter, stream-of-consciousness verses, and guitar squalls, while "Thinking Please," wraps its wistful sentiments in insistent drumming and jack-knifing chords. But what elevates Provisions Fiction & Gear beyond equally catchy contemporaries is its incidental flourishes: the punk-funk breakdown in "Burning Down My Sanity," the cut-and-paste juxtaposition of harsh riffs and dewy flute on "Sleepy," and the robotic vocal manipulations on "Straight Line." Couple these with richly descriptive tales of confusion, heartbreak, and anguish, and you have all of the elements of an engaging and excellent album. --Annie Zaleski
Customer Reviews:
If You don't like, then you aren't any fun!!!!!.......2006-07-09
I love this cd and would still listen to it if it hadn't been stolen from me. For the person who doesn't like #4 then you just aren't a fun person b/c it is a very fun, sexy song. Yes I said sexy listen to it and tell me its not. This is not the best cd in the world , but it is a good one. Simply its fun, listen to it in your car w/the windows down you won't regret it.
Let's get something straight.......2005-08-22
First of all, after reading the reviews, it amazes how many people don't check up on a band before posting. These guys are not studio-bred rock nor do they (or have they ever) called New York home. Moth was born and bred in Cincinnati and its amazing underground original music scene. I have gone to plenty of their shows and they are nothing short of amazing. In fact I much prefer them live to there studio recordings. This band formed over a decade ago, has gone through many changes, Brad Stenz is the only original member left. While I absolutely love Provisions, I don't think this is their best work, obvious influence from a major record label is showing through. Check out their self released album "Drop Deaf" and if you are ever in the Cincinnati area GO TO A SHOW! They have also traveled around the country and abroad many a times, so check out your local scene. Go to [...] for more info on this awesome band!
Drone and Slam---Too Much of the Same.......2004-03-17
Maybe I'm just annoyed at the missing serial comma in the title "Provisions, Fiction and Gear" by Moth, but I'm clearly in the minority of reviewers. The drone and slam approach to music has never done much to excite me, and the notion that one has to adhere to a signature sound instead of trying out something new and different proves stifling. It's as though the band is drawn to produce this one sound much like a moth is drawn to the light.
I like some of the tracks here---Cocaine Star, Burning Down My Sanity, and I See Sound---but it's the session as a whole that falters, leaving one in a stupor much like a moth stunned by cedar.
One quick question: If this CD really merits all those 4 or 5 star ratings, why is it that used copies are going for less than a nickel?

This cd is driving me insane. It's perfect. I haven't stopped listening to it since I acquired it. Over and over. Can't stop. Can't sleep. Can't live. I need to listen. GO FORTH AND PURCHASE!
