Poltz spent more than a decade fronting goofball San Diego rockers The Rugburns before becoming an "overnight sensation" as the cowriter of Jewel's smash single "You Were Meant for Me." On One Left Shoe, he steps out in a similar singer-songwriterly direction, fashioning a collection of confessional folk pop tunes that are about evenly split between movingly memorable and blandly boring. Jewel sings along on the catchiest tune of the bunch, "Silver Lining" (which she cowrote with Poltz); other highlights include "The Great Mystery" and "Kicking Distance." At 57 minutes, the album would be stronger with three or four of the weaker tunes left off; but as a solo debut, One Left Shoe is a largely auspicious affair. --Peter Blackstock

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Steve, you've done better........2003-03-10

There are several good songs on this album, like Silver Lining and Beautiful Day. Definitely worth a listen, but not quite good enough to listen to straight through. Poltz has a gorgeous voice, which he does not fully display on this album (too many years of vocal abuse?). If you like the Rugburns' albums, you are not guaranteed to enjoy this - very mellow and most songs are about broken hearts. But maybe I'm just emotionally jaded... But, again, there are several nice recordings on this album, so give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars A real debut.......2001-02-11

Amazing lyrics, meaningful yet fun and not self-serious. A very talented artist that is just coming out from Jewel's shadow. Only complaint is that it's too dense -- too many good songs and good lyrics to appreciate it all fully.

1 out of 5 stars Ode to a Disposal.......2001-01-28

The title of the album should speak for itself; traditionally, left personifies oddness and percularity. I would recommend this title--it would best describe the album: One Left The Room.

Steve exemplifies an amazing talent of replicatng my kitchen disposal. With this said, this album would be great cracking eggs (Steve seems to like egges, as mentioned in "You were meant for me) and grinding coffee beans.

If you have an acquired taste in this type of music (low, course, and raspy -- like one's voice gets after smoking a lot of cigarettes),-- and like an aquired taste in pork rinds, this is an album for you.

5 out of 5 stars One word - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......2000-09-12

I beg to differ with the amazon.com reviewer. I don't think there's a dud on this album. While some of the lyrics can be corny (luck/buck/stuck etc), the album is a powerful, sweet album full of raw emotion. Highlights include "forbidden fruit", a song about a fictional encounter with a prostitute ("in my mind my mother said "you'd better not!"/then again she always told me that i wouldn't like the taste of beer"), "everything about you", a love song he wrote for a friend of his who died a few days after he played it to her, and "good morning (waking up with you)", a song which i think easily rivals You were meant for me. The easygoing accoustic guitar, sweet sentiments, great vocal delivery all point to the track that could have been. ie, if this track had been properly promoted, this could have been the equivelant of what "who will save your soul" was for Jewel. Anyway, i look forward to his next album with intense pleasure, as I have listened to this so much, constantly, that it has created a lot of joy for me.
