4 out of 5 stars Real good........2006-11-12

John Kongos was, apparently, really hot in South Africa in the Sixties and Seventies, and you can see why from this album. It shows a guy who could belt 'em out with the best of the white British rockers of that time; he particularly reminds me of early Seventies Elton John (and it seems appropriate that most of Mr. Dwight's MADMAN-era band is helping Kongos out here as well). The songs are also outstanding; "Jubilee Cloud" is great quasi-gospel, as is "Come On Down Jesus," and "Gold" and "Tomorrow I'll Go" are as good a set of songs as any of the John/James Taylor/Carole King collection from back in the day. But the two standouts are the songs that bookend the album, "Tokoloshe Man" and especially "He's Gonna Step On You Again," rockers that are ferocious and snarling, and you want to play them over and over the way you do with any good song.

I was vaguely aware of Kongos in the Seventies, but I'm glad I finally had a chance to become better acquainted with his music. This is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rock from a Parallel Universe.......2004-05-13

About 15 years ago, I happened to stumble across the music of Alex Chilton's Big Star. It was exciting to learn that there was still some great music out there from the classic rock era which had not been played into the ground by FM radio. I recently felt a similar sense of excitement on hearing John Kongos great self-titled album from 1972.
I felt as though I had stepped into a parallel universe where there might be a whole new set of classic albums from what is my favorite era in rock music.
This album has a lot to recommend it. First, there is Kongos vocal style which is constantly shifting. He can sound like primal-scream era John Lennon, post-Love era Arthur Lee, early glam-style David Bowie, or he can go the sincere singer/songwriter route a la Elton John or Billy Joel (circa his "Piano Man" era stuff). At times he also has a ballad style which reminds me a little of Big Star's more melancholy side.
The album itself has kind of an early-Bowie glitter rock vibe to its sound. I think this must be owed to the excellent production techniques because the songwriting is of a more sincere, down-to-earth pop style (post-Beatles Paul McCartney comes to mind). There are some nice T. Rex meets Keith Richards guitar sounds on some tracks while others have Elton John's trademark piano and strings orchestration to carry them.
It's really a nice juxtaposition of advanced/modern sounding production techniques against a more organic Van Morrison/Cat Stevens type earthy feel.
I haven't heard the earlier import versions but I think Collector's Choice has done a nice job with packaging and sound quality of this CD. I usually don't like bonus tracks (I like to recreate the original listening experience) so I actually prefer this type of reissue.
