4 out of 5 stars View it as a new beginning.......2005-05-28

Although Wetton suggests that this is the third of a musical trilogy that began with VOICE MAIL and continued with ARkANGEL, I think it is better to view WELCOME TO HEAVEN as the first part of Wetton's "rebuilding" phase. The production on this album is generally weak, and many of the songs sound like glorified demo recordings, albeit cleaned up nicely. The songwriting, however, is top notch, and this album features some of Wetton's most rousing solo material to date. The bonus track, "Love Is," is absolutely indispensable. Many longtime Wetton collaborators are featured on the album, which is also the first to include John Mitchell and Steve Christie in supporting positions. They returned on Wetton's next solo album (ROCK OF FAITH), and they became essential members of the ICON band in 2005, which reunited Wetton with Geoffrey Downes. From a group of friends on HEAVEN, to a core solo band for FAITH, the rebuilding of Wetton's musical vision then culminated with ICON. All three albums are highly recommended to classic ASIA and Wetton fans.

4 out of 5 stars Asemiasia.......2003-06-26

Legendary Asia vocalist John Wetton's solo album in 2000 is truly enjoyable for 80's pop/hard rock fans particularly if you love Asia's debut and second album.

John Wetton in this album collaborated with some of the greatest rock songwriters such as Ringo Starr and Jim Peterik (ex Survivor). This extra-track version drew attention because two extra tracks are co-written with Jim Peterik. No Ordinary Miracle is the best among three tracks co-written with Jim Peterik. It is up to par for the songwriting master but still be comparable with "The Smile Has Left In Your Eyes" memorable ballad hit from Alpha. "Where Do We Go From There" is one of the highlights from this album, excellent pop rocker and "Say It Isn't So" another dynamic pop rock track reminds me a bit of that "Heat Of The Moment".

Extra tracks "Love Is" and "Space and Time" is not bad tracks but not super for Jim Peterik related works either. "Love Is" has great heavy-riffed intro but song as a whole is mediocre at best. "Space and Time" is a remake of Battle Lines track maybe of interest for die-hard fans. If you do not expect his prime time quality and his brilliant vocal range during 80s, this album will surely fit you well.

Recommended for Asia and John Wetton fans and some of Survivor, Foreigner and Journey fans.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing.......2001-05-22

Wetton is one of the premier voices of rock, and I was hooked with the first Asia album. When he left the band and released his solo "Battle Lines" (also known as "Voice Mail" in some countries), I was extremely pleased with the results.

"Archangel" followed a couple years after, and though very different from "Battle Lines" in tone it was brilliant.

So, with Asia releasing their newest "Aura" and Wetton releasing "Welcome to Heaven / Sinister" all in about the same time, I was very excited. However, "Heaven" is a mediocre release at best. I think both the songs and production are sub par for Wetton. The emotion from his previous 2 releases is missing from this album, and try after try (I've listed to it MANY times, wanting to like it) I'm still dissappointed. I bought the "Heaven" version for the 2 bonus tracks, but I should have saved my money. "Love is" is ok, and the new version of "Space and Time" is pathetic - and I love the original version.

Sorry, Mr. Wetton. As one of your biggest fans, I still much prefer the new Asia "Aura" release.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance Shines On.......2001-05-11

John is one of the masters of modern music along with King Crimson and all it's other counter parts (Lake, Sinfield, Levin, Bruford, etc.) he definately holds his own. I love John's voice and the feel of his songs. So now we have "Sinister/Welcome To Heaven" as we had "Battle Lines/Voice Mail". Thanks John! I will keep listening!
