Customer Reviews:
Great effort from a great guitarist.......2007-02-16
I have been a fan of Nuno's for many many years, even having met him once. He is truly a gifted and great person. I was sad when Extreme split, but it did allow Nuno to find himself. His work with Mourning Widows, Population 1 and Dramagods saw Nuno searching for a place to call his own. This CD is part of that exploration. His skill as a guitarist is unequaled, and I always admired his voice. I thought his voice was underused during his time with Extreme. Nuno has the fantastic ability to write very catchy tunes, with sweet harmonies layed on top. Nuno is one of those musicians that stand out. It's impossible to deny his talent. He was born to be a star if you will. In that way, it seems the demise of Extreme was inevitable; it's impossible to keep someone like Nuno in the confines of a group such as Extreme, no matter how good or bad you think they were. A course was plotted during his time in that band, and Nuno has engaged.
The best effort from Nuno's post "EXTREME" career........2005-11-01

Mourning Widows: Furnished Souls For Rent
Thank you very much for reading my post.
Wow where do I begin to tell you how good this album is? For starters it is my personal
opinion Nuno's best effort in his post "Extreme" career. Have not heard a good hard rock
album this good in a very long time. From Start to finish this one rocks all the way through.
Can not believe that when this came out that it did not become a great commercial success
especially when you take into consideration how horrible mainstream hard rock is these days.
Once again Nuno Bettencourt proves that he is not just one of the greatest guitarist of all
time, but that he is a real musican. A lot of great guitarist write great guitar riffs, but
not great lyrics on their solo and side project bands. Unlike other rocker guitarist Nuno
writes and composes songs from a musical stand point and not just a guitar head view. As far
as I am concerned "Furnished Souls For Rent" justifies that Nuno is arguably one of the most
complete guitarist in the world for he is a great singer, great song writer, great producer,
great musican, and a guitar God.
The songs found on here are just amazing. You have to have a hook in good hard rock music and
every song on here has a hook. Plus great, as always, lyrics that can be tongue at cheek at
times and serious at other times. When I first bought this cd about two years ago I could not
get enough of it and kept replaying it over and over. And it seemed that almost every time that
it was played something new was heard on each tune. This has to be one of the most underrated
Hard Rock albums of all-time. Plus the overall sound was very old school yet modern. You see in
most of todays records the music production has gotten too professional and too much computer
mumbo jumbo crap. It seems like everyone tries to make their music sound too perfect and take
out too many stuff and end result the music sounds too clean or too superficial. Nuno thankfully
has not fallen into this bad modern habit and especially on this album. Here is a hint to all
modern rockers "your music is not supposed to sound perfect" I mean listen to any classic bands
from 70's for proof.
The entire album is great with awesome hard rocking rhythms, great non commercial lyrics, thick
bass lines, decent drumming, great classic production, and plenty of guitars. By the way did I
tell you this album has great guitars? The lyrics make you think too.
I love every single song on here, but will only discuss four of them. My personal favorites are
the first 2 songs "Furnished Souls For Rent" which is maybe the best modern hard rock song you
never heard & "No Regrets" song number two. Both of these songs are just amazinly well written.
On the title cut "FSFR" the simple yet powerful main lyrics say it all: "She is heaven she's my
haven my escape! She goes all the way. She knows no glory tells a story with her face! Furnished
Souls For Rent." And NO this is not a power ballad either.
And on Song number two the best line is: "Don't obey the teacher tell her kids shut up! Mold you
into USELESS robots not allowed to feel. Quit your job tomorrow, quit your job today, take a
permanent vacation your dying everyday." Enough said!
The last two songs are also my favorites "War Paint" which is a classic great historically
referenced hard rocker and the opinions expressed are the truth as only Nuno could. The best
line on this song: "Put on your War paint cos here they come to claim your home & claim your
mother. Put on your war paint cos here they come to change your GOD & crush your own beliefs.
Put on your war paint cos here they come to spread the lies and leave you with disease!"
Is this not the best historical hard rock lyrics ever written? Ever?!
The last song "Angerexia" just totally rocks. It is a simplistic song but it is very powerfully
written about anger, hatred, and malice. I could really identify with this song because it just a
cool song to end a great record. This rocker shows that you can not always be happy or be good.
You have to have a balance of both Good & Evil that is just life. The lyrics say it all:
"You don't know why your angry! You don't know why your mad! It's a USELESS Revolution! Yeah!
Lazy RESOLUTION!"
I wish could desrcibe every song on this album but it would take a book to describe it all.
Like mentioned earlier there are not, in my personal opinion, any bad songs on here. This is
Nuno's best work, until proven otherwise, in his post "Extreme" career.
My advice to you if you do not already own this album is to:
GO BUY, BEG, BURROW, OR STEAL THIS ALBUM NOW!

NUNO ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF... AGAIN.......2002-07-07
I've actually had this CD for a year or so but haven't got around to adding my two cents worth... What a great follow-up CD to Mourning Widows last venture. Nuno is the master of HARD ROCK/FUNK-FUSION. Ever since he left Extreme he has really reinvented himself finding his own unique style. Mourning Widows has an authentic and melodic sound that defies classification. Nuno's songwriting seems to get better with every album (as well as his singing), case in point "Upside Downside". This is the quintessential funk n roll song. If your a Nuno fan you will NOT be disappointed. If you have no idea who Nuno is, broaden your horizons! Pick up this CD and be prepared to get your groove on!!! -I had to drop a star for the poor import quality, it really lacks that crisp clean cutting-edge recording studio sound.
Out of 7 albums, The best of Bettencourt's work so far...........2002-05-23
From the first defiant pull offs of Play with me, to the cynical out-look at fashion of Hip Today, Extreme were may favourite band, with them out of the picture and various solo careers looking tediously un original i thought there Nuno would retire or give up or both.
But thank god he didn't....
He went on to form boston based trio Mourning Widows with Donovan, his cousin or something, and Jeff Consi,
"Furnished souls for rent" became the best rock album i had heard since everything had seemed to become written in a minor key.
Put down you Nickelback and Incubus Cd's and pick this up,
The clever lyrics leave you thinking about the song days after the last time you hear it.
The well though out solo's suit the song perfectly unlike some of Extreme's earlier work.
Don't go expecting aything even remotely extreme-ish because it isn't.
Not at all, it's catchy, loud, funky, and eveyrtime you listen to it it you seem to hear something new.
This is exactly what i want from a cd.
Even if you are doubtful reach for your credit card and buy this CD NOW!!!!!!!!
You won't regret it.
