Austin, Texas, pumps out idiosyncratic folk-country singer/songwriters faster than a mint prints money. The difference is that mints print mostly dollar bills while Austin consistently produces the big notes. Sure, Beaver Nelson revolves around the Townes Van Zandt axis, but he has found his own bold and compelling songwriting voice. After being screwed around by major labels for the better part of the 1990s, Nelson finally emerged in 1998 with the provocative <I>Last Hurrah</I>, a record that is edgy and brassy yet oddly soothing. His musical settings range from Stones-like jangle and swagger to warm acoustic strumming, but they are merely springboards for his world-weary lyrics. In the end, what comes across is a man who's been beaten down (by the world and by his own behavior) yet finds beauty in the cycle of it all. Addictive.......2007-05-12

So, I heard Beaver first on Pandora, and finally broke down and bought the album. I can never hear "Too Much Moonlight" too many times. Even though he sounds like he is shackled by his own angst sometimes, he still seems like the kind of dude you want at your party to sit and laugh with about how ridiculous day to day life can be. Right on Beaver. Glad to make your (musical) acquaintance. :)

It's about time!.......2000-06-22

[Disclosure: Beaver was a buddy of mine from summer camp, and I got to see his first public performance. I believe it was the Hooters' "Where Do The Children Go" performed with Will T. Massey.] That said, I've waited years and years for Beaver to put out an album. Well worth the wait, my friends. The boy's just got songwriting talent. Texas is so unbelievably blessed with amazing songwriters, and Beaver's to be counted among them. I thought this CD was great, and at least 10 of my non-Beaver-friend friends agreed and bought the disc. Go get it.

One of the best CDs you've never heard.......2000-06-08

Great songs with some of the best musicians Austin has to offer backing him up. Simply one of the most skilled songwriters around. You can hear the influence of Townes, Dylan and Springsteen on almost every cut but it is not in the least bit derivative. If lyrics are your "thing", you owe it to yourself to check out this CD.

Buy this record. Beaver Nelson can put your despair, sorrow, hope, love, or reckless resignation into words that you'll not forget. My only problem with this record is why there aren't more...
