Nothing Special.......2006-12-05
I am surprised at the amount of positive responses Rocky Athas has got.
I am also surprised that the name "Eric Clapton" has not been uttered, as there is a similarity in the vocals there. But, in my opinion, the vocals are more akin to Canadian Blues guitar merchant "John Campbelljohn" and little known Essex (England) guitarist "Clive Mulcahy". In all cases, the vocals are tedious with no passion in there. The guitar work is competent and well produced, but I have heard it all before. The music is a mixture of straight out Texan Blues to slow blues to the occasional Acoustic Blues and the odd "poppy" one. I would advise you to check out the CDs by John Campbelljohn first and then judge my thoughts. Voodoo Moon is in similar style to this one. To sum it up, in the U.K., he would'nt get past the Pub Circuit.
Great Texas Blues Band.......2005-09-02
Texas is well known for being the home of a lot of great blues artists. Rocky Athas is one of these. Mr. Athas, along with a great band and vocalist Larry Samford have released a very special group of songs on this well produced album. The collection starts of with the smashing "Miracle" and leads you along through song/stories of real life. It is so refreshing to find real people playing real music for the love of what they are doing. Mr. Samford has the perfect voice for these songs. He has the sound of experience (a requirement for the material to sound "honest") without being harsh. I know this is a cliché, but Mr. Athas is a true guitar wizard. His skill is readily apparent through the various styles and tempos recorded here. He can ring the emotion from each note on the slow passages or move like `lightning' on the rockers. I wish these guys all the success in the world for keeping blues/ blues rock alive and kicking. Why did I give them only 4 stars? 5 Stars is for Sgt. Pepper, Dark Side of the Moon, and Beggars Banquet.
Stunning.......2005-03-02
I chanced on this CD, thank goodness I did, an absolutely superb set of soulful Texas blues.
I can't wait for their latest to come out shortly

It's not a miracle.......2004-02-13
It's not a miracle, it's how it should be. I was first introduced to Rocky Athas through Black Oak Arkansas' album "The Wild Bunch", and after seeing them preform seversl times I knew Rocky was one of the best I had heard play. This newest release is some of the best blues based music I've heard lately. Rocky really show just why he is one of the best. I highly recomend this CD to anyone looking to hear quality music, which is lacking today. If you get the chance to see The Rocky Athas Group live do so, if not get the CD you will not be disappointed. And if you want to hear Rocky play southern R&R check out BOA's The Wild Bunch.
