Customer Reviews:
One of America's BEST rock bands ever! A rock GEM!.......2005-04-05
I first heard 'Flesh and Blood' and 'Breakout' during heavy rotation on NYC's WNEW-FM back in the early 80's and I was instantly blown away! If there was justice in the world, they would have been as big as REO or Journey! After wearing out 2 copies of this LP, i'm ecstatic this underrated album was released on CD. These guys are genius songwriters, balancing straightforward hook-laden guitar driven rock with slower ballady stuff, and even piano and violin thrown in at times. It all works and then some, to say the least. 'Hollywood' is absolutely MESMERIZING! If you like tight, riff and lead guitar-driven rock, 'Shooting Star' delivers some of the best songwriting this side of a Marshall stack!!!
The best band you've never heard of..........2005-02-12
I first heard Shooting Star on MTV during the summer of 1980. "You've Got What I Need" was the video and even through the tinny speaker on my tv, I knew this was a band I wanted to hear more of. I picked up that first album and later got "Hang On For Your Life" as well. These first two sets are excellent examples of melodic '80's pop metal. Excellent musicianship, tight arrangements with great hooks and melodies, typical lyrics. Well performed. "Shooting Star" also put on a heck of a live show. I saw them perform at Wolfgang's in San Francisco in 1982. Their high energy show is still a highlight in my rock n roll memory. Like one of the other reviewers, I thought these guys were going to be huge. Unfortunately, the songwriting on the succeeding albums just didn't have the same verve and the band quickly faded. Still, if you enjoyed Kansas and Boston in their primes, give these two albums a shot. You won't be disappointed.
Shooting stars rock.......2004-04-07
I remember when these guys were a KISW rising star band. They had an absolutely FANTASTIC song called hang on and it rocked. I bought the cassette (remember them) for 3.98 and it was the BEST "album" I ever bought for 3.98. I did'nt see their rising star show (I did see Zebra which was great - opened by Queensryche a local band at the time). The Album is great for every song. One of the few that you can listen to every song and get motivated. I never followed them after this one (where did they go....) but I will ALWAYS remember Hang On, Fleash and Blood, Holywood, Are You On My Side. If there is an album I would compare this to it would be Get The Knack by The Knack because it kicks so much ASS and you never heard from them again, but why are they not the biggest stars of all time? Who cares, I'll be listening....
It never got any better than this.......2004-03-09
I think that most fans of the band would agree that this is Shooting Star's finest moment, having been given more airplay on AOR stations than the debut or any of the three albums that followed. Shooting Star was one of the bands that I always expected to be the next big thing, but for some reason after this strong effort, they failed to take off. Too bad. This album is a killer. For my money, Flesh And Blood, Hang On For Your Life, Are You On My Side, Hollywood and Breakout deserve to be on any compilation album from 1981, but it seems that Shooting Star is all but forgotten when it comes to eighties nostalgia. I guess that's okay though. After all, how many of us will ever listen to Centerfold or I Love Rock And Roll again without wanting to inhale a bullet?
