Customer Reviews:
The first half blew my mind; the 2nd half was kinda nifty.......2006-06-05
As you can see from the other reviews, Pilate has weathered comparisons to U2, OK Computer-era Radiohead, and Coldplay. The truth is, Pilate is more soulful than the lot. OK Computer was about paranoia, U2 is about the middle class, and Coldplay is about U2. Ahem.
I find more Remy Zero in them than anything else. That is to say, Pilate doesn't rock out. They get rock-ish, but their strength is in soaring vocals, driving melodies, and haunting bittersweetness. If Pilate was just a little less talented, much of this album would submerge into dreamy but ultimately forgettable mood music. Then the lead vocal goes flying above the close harmonies and you realize that the band is trying to communicate something, rather than just jamming or lining their pockets with another cynical formula. They have a passion for good music, but they also have a passion for telling stories.
Every song on the album has at least *something* that's not just interesting, but captivating. The mournful, vaguely Spanish middle section of "Don't Waste Your Breath" (which strongly recalls World Leader Pretend, by the way) leads into a quiet bridge where the listener finds himself hung on every word and chord. Then the song closes with a slow build that so many lesser bands get lost in.
Instead of trying to strike a common chord with the listener, Pilate tells you about its story, and no one cares because the music is so amazing. Sometimes brittle and tragic ("Collide"), sometimes strident and joyous ("Into Your Hideout"), Pilate weaves around hurdles that historically have buried lesser musicicans, although the songs do get overlong sometimes.
There's so much emotion invested in each track, and the process of the listening to the album becomes a window into the daydreams and regrets of a someone who's up at 4AM and staring at the ceiling, wondering about his life and the world around him. If you've been there, this album should speak to you.
Unfortunately, "Perfect Thrill" hits like a brick wall of filler, and the spell the album put on me never quite recovered. From that point on, I got the creeping feeling that Pilates has said everything it wanted to say, but for some obligations. The second half reaches the heights of the first, but it never stays for long. This isn't exactly astonishing, but it is disappointing.
Either way you look at it, though, Pilate offers more on the first side than the overwhelming majority of their brethren can provide on a whole album. If you like music that has electric guitars, drums, bass, and a dude singing, then you'll find a lot to like here.
Radiohead meets Coldplay meets Keane.......2006-04-26
Really great, I've been listening to this CD since the summer of 2003 and it's still as good as it was three years ago. You should really check it out. And their second album, "Sell Control for Life's Speed" is just as good, it hit stores in Canada on April 25th. Definately a band that's going places.
Import?.......2005-12-05
That's funny, because these guys are from Canada! (Wow, 25 bucks.) Anyways, I'm not surprised to see that this album has 5 stars. A while ago I was debating whether or not to get this album. I didn't hesitate after I saw 5 stars.
This album is very mellow, but has awesome songs! I love Melt Into the Walls and The Travel Song. Not much else to say, besides that this is a great album.
Great, Great CD.......2005-08-09
What a terrific sound! I love this band! Great lead singer and good songwriting. God bless our friends from the north!
I am very much pleased.......2005-07-19
This band seriously cuts to the core of everything I look for in music; mood, intelligence, reflection, originality, and a feeling of completion. Clarks voice conveys a journey that resonates even after the song is over that leaves you in awe. The songs go from a beautiful deep sorrow feeling "collide," to more pop like songs "into your hideout." There isn't a sense of annoying experimental repetition in the music, instead the band harmonizes cleverly with the mysterious voice of Clark.
There is a sense of balance between intelligent and original melodies within the songs...
