Customer Reviews:
enjoyable background music.......2006-05-02
Overall, "Pickin' on Beck: The Bluegrass Tribute" is a pleasant listen. On the downside, the arrangements are straight-forward, predictable and show little innovation or interpretation. If the listener prefers tributes that sound 'very recognizable,' this dynamic may actually be an asset. Unlike the engaging originals, the disc works best in the background. These issues shouldn't be surprising; like most of the new Bluegrass tribute albums, the performers comprise a studio band that was created by the record company. On the upside, there is a good representation of Beck's career, beginning with "Mellow Gold" and moving chronologically to "Guero." I would liked to have awarded this three and a half stars. Instead of knocking it down to three, I decided to bump it up to four stars given the jam factor. This is a prize for Beck fans who enjoy instrumental and acoustic jam-based music. On the other hand, this recording should be avoided if the listener isn't an instrumental enthusiast and doesn't especially appreciate improvisation. In terms of Beck tributes, this is on a similar level of quality with Lonnie Smith's "Boogaloo to Beck." While not essential, "Pickin' on Beck" makes enjoyable background music.
Just awful.......2006-01-11
Let me first say that I'm a big fan of re-arranging songs in different genres... and I would think that Beck's songs are pretty good vehicles for such a tribute. But I can't believe how bad this is!
The band obviously has some reasonable players in it, but they just seem to miss the point, mostly playing boring retreads of the originals, seemingly trying to avoid any elements of bluegrass! It doesn't help that there are no vocals, and absolutely no arrangement to speak of - the songs are all extended by way of tedious solos (often by the scratchy and harmonically-challenged violinist).
The pick of the bunch (i.e. best, not worst) is probably Sexx Laws, which retains the funkiness of the original but at least doesn't shy completely away from bluegrass stylings. There's some ok solos, mercifully short, and it just has a nice vibe to it (despite some obvious mistakes).
All in all, a good idea but not thought out nearly enough.
