5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2003-06-02

I bought this cd years ago on a whim and was heartbroken when it was lost during a move. When I finally found it again on Amazon, I grabbed it immediately. It is probably the best collection of modern surfbilly music you will ever hear. Buy it, have a party...you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A Contemporary, Nitro-Methane Powered Compilation.......2001-11-08

After the past couple years of listening to several classic surf compilations, The Ventures, Dick Dale, The Challengers, The Astronauts and Laika & the Cosmonauts, I found this contemporary compilation a real breath of fresh air! It has a good variety of styles and sounds, ranging a from the classic Ventures type sound to psycho-billy, and garage punk a la Ramones. I don't normally like punk and other bizzare stuff due to the unwanted side-effects, (headaches and/or gagging due to repulsive lyrics, headbanging, etc.) but somehow this album captures the positive essences and it works. I appreciated each piece. There wasn't a track on it that I didn't like. Some of it was unexpected and surprizing, but there's power, lots of energy, and excitement. I thought it all worked pretty well together. It's turned me on to a bunch of bands that I now want to explore further, for it now seems I've led an isolated surf life so far....and now I can never go back. This is definitely not bedtime lullaby music. If Quentin Tarantino was to use this music for the basis of a future "Pulp Fiction" sequel, we'd all in for one bizzare, wild ride. May need to be institutionalized in an instru-mental ward.....
All kidding aside, I'd say this is a must-have for anyone that enjoys surf music, as long as your not an elitest, surf-purist, protector-of-surf snob type. If so, steer clear of this one. However, you may not like the future.....I think it sounds like this!

5 out of 5 stars A very very good collection.......2001-07-30

The very best surf music, of this times. The sound is incredible, it is a Hi-Fi CD. So if you like The Aqua Velvets, The Mermen, surf, garage, and lounge music, you'll love this one.

2 out of 5 stars Better ways to spend your $.......2001-07-28

This album has great cover art and a wide variety of sounds. However, the "fun-factor" is seriously lacking on much of it. Sounds range from lazy lounge music to psychotic garage guitar. I don't care for those extremes most of the time, particularly not together. So, I have to skip around a lot with this cd.
Here are the highlights of the album:
Woggles-Fun thrasher reminiscent of Agent Orange's punk-style surf covers.
Halibuts-Very fun and original tune with saxaphone.
Hillbilly Frankenstein-funny, entertaining tune that drifts between a twangy surf-rock sound and la-la lounge music.
Paul Johnson-Excellent electric and acoustic piece at a galloping pace.
Teisco Del Rey-Lots of twang and some saxaphone, too.
Spies Who Surf-Twangy spy and surf, just like it says.
The Ultras-Catchy tune with a lot of pep.
The track by Jon & the Nightriders was disappointing to me because its recording quality is so much poorer than their recording of the same tune on their "Fiberglass Rocket" CD. Jon & the Nightriders are the best surf band out there today (if they have not finally disbanded that is). Their "Moving Target" is one of my favorite albums.
