Album Description

Hugo Race was a founding member and is a powerful transient element of Nick Cave's infamous Bad Seeds. He played on 'Kicking Against The Pricks', 'Tender Prey' and 'Murder Ballads'. Hugo Race released nine independent albums in Europe in the last decade with his band The True Spirit. The five albums released on Germanyªs Normal Records are all out of print. Three of the four albums on Glitterhouse are still available, only the limited mailorder release 'Wet Dream' is sold out. Now is the time to either introduce yourself to the sounds of this musical genius or to just remind yourself how great this stuff really was/is - because 'Long Time Ago', a double CD for the price of one, is a career retrospective containing a kind of best-and-rarest, with studio tracks from 9 albums, remix versions, unreleased material and live cuts. All tracks have been remastered by Hugo himself. The booklet contains extensive sleevenotes and a wide range of photographs from the True Spirit archives. Although undeniably rooted in the American blues, critics and fans have been hard pressed to define what the nature of his music really is - rock, psychedelia, industrial, experimental, or just plain eclectic. Actually each new release has caused more confusion as to how Hugo Race's music should be categorised, which caused a great deal of inconvenience to those addicted to the practice of pigeon-holing. It is raw, honest, yet perfectly crafted. Majestic, cool and wise, extremely rich in contrast with a dark mood throughout, spooky and intense. And definitely underrated. 28 tracks on two CDs (recorded between 1988 and 1999) including, 'Louise's Hands', 'Solid State' & 'Apocalypse'. Slimline double jewel case.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mean, whiskey-soaked blues.......2002-08-13

I came across the name of Hugo Race via Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and figured that I might like his style as well. I was not disappointed. Hugo Race & True Spirit recreated an old blues and country sound on original songs like "Deepfried", "Three Forks", and "Second Revelator". They also dipped into the wealth of the music's past by covering Son House's "John The Revelator", Tennessee Ernie Ford's "River of No Return", and Blind Willie Johnson's "Treat A Stranger Right". The Bad Seeds paid him back the favor of his performances with them by supplying the help of multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey on a few tracks; Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld apparently introduced him to his guitarist in his other band, Einsturzende Neubauten, one Alex Hacke who also pitched in a few songs. If you like the older, bluesier Bad Seeds sound then Hugo Race will not disappoint.
