Customer Reviews:
living the ordinary girl.......2006-08-24
Twinkle's honest and uncomplicated presentation makes it easy to indentify with her songs' content: day-to-day problems for adolescent girls. Tackling all sorts of boy-involvement, at times they reveal a sound sexual bottomline.
Twinkle is Twinkle, in her own recognizable way. In 1964-'65 her most famous song 'Terry' generated pretty strong controverse in Britain. Though the song made the Top-5, it was banned by the BBC and Top of the Pops. According to the views back then, "the disc is certainly in very bad taste. No one can stop teenagers buying these kind of records, but I don't see why they should be made in the first place. To anyone who has a teenage son, brother or sweetheart even, killed on a motorbike (and that must be quite a few) it must be sickening".
Well, 'Terry' doesn't sound sickening to me. Times have changed, and Twinkle (Lynn Annette Ripley) still sounds as fresh as she did in the mid-Sixties. Great to listen to.
Twinkle - the endearing Mod and clever girl sings!.......2004-05-02
The thing you really have to love about "Twinkle" (Lynn Ripley - now with a married name), was her downright HONESTY in her early recording days! Unlike the Lulus, Sandie Shaws, Helen Shapiros, Julie Grants and other Brit pop "ingenues" that had the voices to convince us they were actually as old as their songs, Twinkle was believable as what she actually was at the time - a young British Mod teen! Not a great voice, but very child-like and hopeful. Since she wrote many of her own tunes, her lyrics came across like a somewhat lovesick young girl singing to her favorite male pop idol and this was just great and fun to share the feelings. Like she was reading you her diary of crushes. This release with its additional cuts also has a grainy video clip of her performing at the New Music Exchange, and hauntingly enough looking back on her day (Ripley coming first), a current-day Brittney Spears bears a striking resemblance, IMO. Overall, with very few exceptions this is a must-have collection for rare career study of musical prodigies that fascinate us. Many people I've played her music to have enjoyed it thoroughly and are surprised to learn that her version of "Golden Lights" preceded The Smiths'!
A brief but dazzling pop career.......2003-02-01
Twinkle actually had two British hits - Terry and Golden lights - but Terry is the song anybody ever remembers, unless they own any of her other music. Terry is a song about a motorbike rider who commits suicide, so there are inevitable comparisons with Leader of the pack by the Shangri-las. Actually, they are completely different songs. Golden lights, the follow-up, was a brilliant song about a lost boyfriend, but it was only a minor hit, just making the British top 20.
With those two hits behind her, Twinkle (real name Lynn Ripley) looked set for a glittering career, especially as she wrote many of her own songs. It was not to be, but this collection of Twinkle's music is well worth listening to. Twinkle did record a cover of The end of the world, which she doesn't like at all, but I think it is OK, if unexceptional. Perhaps the best of the other tracks is What am I doing here with you.
This is a re-packaging of an earlier Twinkle compilation, with more tracks, including an unreleased track from 1969, five tracks from an aborted 1973 album and her 1984 single, For sale.
When I listen to this collection, I wonder just what Twinkle might have achieved. Many less talented people have achieved far longer lasting success. Twinkle was never short of money and seems happy with her life, so it may be that she lacked ambition. Nevertheless, she made some great music and everything that the record company could find has been included on this CD.
