Initially labeled a country-rock heartbreaker, Linda Ronstadt moved on to establish beachheads in everything from new wave to light opera, from pre-rock pop to traditional Mexican music. Such restlessness has been interpreted as flightiness among doubters, but Ronstadt's headstrong eclecticism has, with time, taken on weight, which is reflected in this suitably hefty four-disc career overview. Here is Ronstadt the musician, an erstwhile Cal-rock pinup girl who refused to sit still for the next photo shoot while churning out more rock-radio fare. Keep in mind that Ronstadt was the first female performer to chalk up seven consecutive platinum albums; she must have faced down considerable pressure to play it safe in the '80s. Indeed, some of the least interesting material found here is the post-Heart Like a Wheel rote rock culled from 1978's Living in the USA and 1980's Mad Love. Blessed with a starburst of a voice and the determination to put her gift to the test, she shines brightest when she's outside her familiar orbit. The Linda Ronstadt Box Set opens with two CDs that essentially serve as best-of sets. Disc three consists of duets with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Aaron Neville, and Frank Sinatra. Disc four, the real windfall here, offers rarities, including her three excellent contributions to Randy Newman's Faust and a contribution to Carla Bley's ambitious jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Ronstadt's Tremendous Talent.......2006-07-17

This box set contains many rarities and unreleased tracks, as well as a great overview of her solo albums and collaborations with others. It focuses on ALL of Ronstadt's musical genres, not just on rock. Hence, it is missing some of her (rock) hits, so it would help to get (or keep) her 2 Greatest Hits albums for a complete hits collection. But you won't feel cheated by this box. It covers rock, pop, country, folk, Mexican canciones, Latin pop, Early Americana, lullabies, operetta, and standards from the Great American Songbook. And the rarities disc alone is worth the price. Ronstadt possesses one of the greatest voices of our generation, and her incredible work gathered in this box is all the proof anyone needs.

5 out of 5 stars Nice compilation for the real Ronstadt fans.......2005-12-30

If you don't buy this collection for any other reason buy it for the excellent sound quality. It's a fairly comprehensive presentation of Ronstadt's material except the the sound in most cases is much better than on the original CD releases. Also included is a disc of unreleased rare material that makes this boxed set a must for any Ronstadt fan. The only negative thing is that there are no selections from the incredible Don't Cry Now album and not enough material from the #1 album Heart Like A Wheel, but well worth the price for anyone who loves Linda Ronstadt's voice.

5 out of 5 stars What a set! Linda Ronstadt totally rocks!.......2005-01-30

I love Linda Ronstadt so much! She has an amazing voice, and is one of my favorite singers. I only knew two or three songs before I got this set, and I now I know about 10 or 20! Here are some songs I would recommend you to hear.

Winter Light (from her album "Winter Light" and from the Secret Garden, 1993)
Don't Know Much (with Aaron Neville)
Somewhere Out There (with James Ingram and on the An American Tail Soundtrack)
Blue Bayou
High Sierra (with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris
I Never Will Marry (with Dolly Parton)
All I Have to Do is Dream (with Kermit the Frog)
Dreams to Dream (from the An American Tail: Fievel Goes West Soundtrack)
When You Wish Upon A Star
My Funny Valentine
Telling Me Lies (with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris)

This is a great set! Buy it today!

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS CD.......2004-10-31

Linda is a very arrogant performer, who kicks her fans down (Or at least those of us who are Republicans and (Or) Christian Conservatives), because she thinks we are inferior. So I would never buy any of her CDs again (And I was a 30 year Ronstadt (Country and rock fan)). As for this CD, not putting "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" on it, is enough of a reason not to purchase it in the first place. Throw in her Mexican material (That is not on the level of Thalia or Jennifer Pena (Let alone Selena)), and the boring Nelson Riddle material that became passe when ELVIS came out. I would sooner listen to Hilliary Duff, Brittney Spears and argggggggggg Paulia Rubio, before I would listen to this CD (Let alone buy it), if I could give it ZERO stars I would. It is simply the worst boxed set I ever heard (And I know most of the material on it).

5 out of 5 stars Glad i made this purchase..........2004-10-16

I, like others i've read in this space, had issues that more of her country rock tunes weren't selected to be remastered and featured on this box set. But my hesitations were alleviated when i listened to the first disc. I was not familiar w/Winter Light - and like i'd read in the past - the production is flawless thruout the Winter Light set. I can see why 6 songs were selected from it. And i about fell over when i newly discovered a couple of the Trio songs from Disc 3; songs that i could play over and over again, whether on my walkman or on a long drive somewhere. Very enjoyable and evocative.
One of the greatest pleasures was rediscovering a song that sounded vaguely familiar, "Easy for You to Say". I about died when i heard it in all its remastered glory.
