Customer Reviews:
His Songs.......2007-01-26
With the music industry going on today, we see a lot of artists really sounding like they are all more manufactured based on the image, rather the the authentic feeling of the music itself. That is why so many acts from the 70's and 80's have all been considered as a total memory. That recently has been the case with Elton John as well. Although he has made some excellent records these past several years, many have disregarded his as a throwback to the past, in favor of wannabe manufactured acts like Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Still, his music is much more solid today, than those acts who are popular, and this hits record does try to show it.
The Very Best Of Elton John is a 1990 double album that tries to be definitive in showing Elton's best songs throughout the 80's and 70's. The collection does handle very well compared to other greatest hits records that were released recently. The songs here have been compiled well and include a lot of his best songs from Your Song to Sacrifice, and mostly everything in between. The album also includes other greats like Tiny Dancer, Blue Eyes, Kiss The Bride, Nikita, and Don't Go breakin' My Heart with Kiki Dee. Although the album does handle well, there are still a lot of good songs that were sadly overshadowed from Elton on this collection. The record overlooks great songs like Empty Garden, Little Jeannie, and Take Me To The Pilot to name a few, which leaves some die hard fans feeling that more could've been added.
While some new fans might consider a better hits record from Elton John like the Greatest Hits 1970-2002 because it is a bit cheaper in price, this double record still is a better reflection of his music at the time it was released. If you are a die hard fan of Elton John, than this is still a decent greatest hits package. The Very Best Of Elton John is a great buy, and I suggest this one for any album collection.

GREATEST HITS 1970 - 1990.......2006-02-28
DIGITALLY REMASTERED, PRINTED LYRICS, COMPLETE VERSIONS, ONE "NEW" SONG: "YOU GOTTA LOVE SOMEONE", HERE ARE ALL OF THE MOST POPULAR HITS OF ELTON JOHN IN THAT PERIOD, IT'S LIKE GREATEST HITS VOLS. I & II, PLUS SOME MORE, THIS WITH GREATEST HITS VOL.III WILL BE JUST FINE, ALL THE BEST FROM THE FIRST 20 YEARS.
Astounding! So Much Good Elton John!.......2005-08-04
Too bad this album is an import, I got it at a regular music store for half of what it is being sold for here. Aside from that, I think if you like Elton John but don't want to wade through all of his material to find his most memorable songs and biggest hits, look no further, X marks the spot, you have found the treasure. Shop around first to see if you can get it for cheaper. If not, you may want to consider getting it here.
Brilliant compilation of his music to 1990.......2004-09-14
Surely, Elton needs no introduction, as he was hugely popular around the world. During the period covered by this compilation, he only had two number one hits in Britain although he had several in America during the same period. Since then, he has had at least four further UK number one hits. So while many people consider the seventies and eighties to be Elton's golden years, he has demonstrated that he is not finished yet.
Even in 1990, Elton had too many great songs to fit on a double CD, the most notable omissions from this one being Tiny dancer, Island girl and Little Jeannie. His more recent compilation covering his career up to 2002 was issued with slightly different track listins in the UK and USA included some of these songs (which ones depend on the edition) but several other tracks were omitted to make way for them and the more recent songs. Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Pinball wizard, Part time love and Passengers are among the songs on this compilation that are omitted from both editions of the 2002 compilation.
You probably have your own particular favorite Elton songs. Of those included here, my favorites in no particular order are Your song, Candle in the wind, Crocodile rock, I'm still standing, Part time love, Sad songs and his duet with the vastly under-rated Kiki Dee, Don't go breaking my heart. The song that really confuses me is Passengers. I've never actually figured out what the song is about. Still, it's not the only such song (another is Whiter shade of pale, the sixties classic).
If you enjoy Elton's music but you're not interested in his more recent music, you may consider buying this compilation instead.
I should add that I had no problem with this set, so the reviewer who had a defective copy must have been unlucky.
