Kingfish - The group ahead of its time........2005-05-26
They had Bob Weir, Matthew Kelley, Robbie Hodinot (hope I spelled that right) and many, many talented musicians. I saw them in the early 80's at a small club in Syracuse, New York. To put it bluntly, they brought the house down. Half the people had not even heard of them. I had this album when it first came out, and then Trident(...).
This was a brilliant studio album, and if you have an above average stereo to play it on (the last reviewer probably didn't) you can hear all the nuisances associated with a great production.
They were one of my top bands from the mid 70's on, and to THIS day I am still addicted to this CD. It is one of my all time favorite COOL sounding CD's. Ahead of it's time. Hypnotize is pure genius. Get it, you will not be sorry.
Weir Does Justice To Marty Robbins Gunslinger Classic.......2004-05-14
Surely the standout on this mid-seventies Bob Weir/Kingfish recording is the Marty Robbins gunslinger classic Big Iron. Robbins was the absolute master of the western gunfighter song. Check out El Paso, Running Gun and They're Hanging Me Tonight all from the definitive Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs. Give Weir credit he pulls off Big Gun with the same tongue in cheek, no holds barred, two fisted bravada, as in My Uncle. Look out I'm comming at you with both guns smokin'!!!!
The balance of the album is made up of several fine Weir compositions, Lazy Lighting and the smugglers send-up Goodbye Your Honnor are nicely done. Asia Minor is interesting and has overtones of Blues For Allah. Perhaps second only to the superlative "Ace", this is Bob's best overall effort. Maybe if we're lucky, (or should I say Weir Lucky) Rhino Records will reissue the Greatful Dead Records catalog. Boy would I love to get my heads on this one, as well as "Ace", "Garcia" and "Wake Of The Flood". Come on Rhino, what gives?
Good for open minded listeners.......2002-12-10
This is a pretty good CD - you get a real distinct sound from the band - a little blues mixed with a twinge of psychedeilia and campfire harmonica. This was done the year the Dead took some time off - and Bobby put some good stuff on here. Home to Dixie is a neat song much like his later 70's stuff - wish they would break that one out.
Big Iron.......2002-04-24
even though the band named Kingfish copied some songs that were allready out their they put more sparkle and life into them then the original artist. The band had several musician`s come and go during a life span that (I hope is not over yet). One of the more famous being Bob Weir of the Greatful Dead, who was only in a few albums, but a good ear can pick him out even if they never heard of Kingfish.I guess my favorite album that I still have stashed away is the Trident album,it`s been a while since i have seen or heard it, if I am getting LP album names mixed up I am sorry but it is the only one that was not put on cd format that i know of.It has a song on it called (hurricane)and after living in FL.I sure miss it.If you want to hear good music get your hands on any Kingfish albume you will not be disapointed no matter what your age is.James Gezelman
Beware---not very good........2000-12-15
I was familiar with Lazy Lightning and Supplication (from the Grateful Dead), so i expected this disc to be a lot better than it actually is.
Three of the songs are worth listening to---Lazy Lightning, Supplication, and Hypnotize. The rest of the songs are throwaways at best. The vocals (not sung by Bob Weir) are bland, and the playing is uninspired.
