That the title cut is a cover of the Fontella Bass tune gives you a clue as to the soulful direction of this 1975 album, and the Tower of Power horns make sure you get Roy's groovin' drift! Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The American Axe.......2005-10-22

I have always been enchanted by the way Roy sounded on guitar ,and in my early childhood ,when i was introduced to this (unknown) american legacy through the ultimate instrumental piece of music that haunted -and still haunts- my soul ( the messiah will come again ) , i knew that i am listening to one of the best musicians i will ever get to listen to.
Since that time , i bought all of Roy's recordings and tried to lay my hands on his rare singles ,and i came across this album ... and i expected no less , the master is playing , the master never let me down.
Did he sell his soul to the devil so he can craft these tunes ? did he know that he can not get any better so he decided to hang him self on that melancholic day ? we would never know ... but if you listen carefully to the short instrumental ( in the beginning ) ,you will realize that this amazingly sorrowful spirit who managed to create these celestial melodies , this essence, would not choose to live in our so-called material world ... no ... it would select something more abstract which is best represented by death ... hence the suicide .
