Customer Reviews:
Decent "nederbeat" band if you like this kinda stuff..........2005-12-15
some stats: CD#1= 72:08 CD#2= 72:55
What is 'nederbeat'? Let me give it a try. During the heyday of rock-n-roll in the 1950's, 60's, and into the early 1970's, the music scene was being interpreted throughout the world by the various diverse youth culture "scenes". Like the youth in the States and UK primarily, other countries (along with their aspiring talent) had smaller and obviously a less developed record industry to capitalize on a booming potential.
Eventually these new artists', in their expression of artistic freedom, formed bands and made music (like anywhere) in which their inspirations (from imports and word of moulth) helped them develop a "sound" somewhat particular to their geographic location and exposure in the prevailing music of that time (in the case here 1965-1974).
"Nederbeat", or Northern Beat, is the rock scene of the Netherlands. It is somewhat insular in that it wears it's influences on its sleeve, and in many cases draws alot from R&B,Blues, and the mysterious elixer of psychedelica.
Q65 is a better than average nederbeat band, more innovative than most of its kind. The music is innovative, energized, and now and then a genre-twisting mix of styles. Fans of this stuff have fun identifying the influences (you know who you are).
This collection has the A sides on cd#1,and the B sides on cd#2. The lions share of music is from 1966(11 trks) and 1967(12 trks), with a decent sampling of 1968(5), 1970(4), and 1971(6).
The Dutch label which puts out most of the quality 2cd boxes of Nederbeat is called 'POP INSTITUTIONAL'. They do a quality job on box sets featuring several great groups such as CUBY AND THE BLIZZARDS, OUTSIDERS, BINTANGS,and SHOCKING BLUE. Each of these sets include copious liner notes (with pix) and the overall package is handsomely put together.
To some extent Nederbeat is an aquired taste. Though sung almost exclusively in English, some of the above mentioned groups have an identifiable accent (including Q65) which can give a band the aura of "wannabe's" and not taken seriously. But if you can overlook these minor blemishes, the music is sincere, heartfelt, and FUN! Listened to from the "inside-looking-out" rather than the other way around can make Nederbeat as addictive as anything else out there.
