4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2004-09-25

Who would have thought if you brought Vintersorg together with members of Naglfar and Bewitched, you'd get this release. As good as it is, I wouldn't file it under metal. Sure, it has a lot of evident metal influences, but this sounds more to me like something that would happen if Sisters Of Mercy and Bauhaus joined forces with Field Of The Nephilim and Paradise Lost. The sound is very gothic, and a must-have for any fan of the genre. When anyone asks me how I would describe Havayoth, I always reply, "It's Vintersorg's goth rock side-project." Don't be discouraged by that however. This CD is actually quite good. The music is top notch and quite catchy. Even metal fans will dig this CD. There are lots of good hooks and interesting musical techniques throughout. And for any fan of Vintersorg, the man with the golden voice, don't let this one pass you by. Some of his best work is on this one.

The funereal overture "Transcendence" yields to the power goth of "Mirrors" and it's readily apparent Havayoth are not lighting a fire under the ass of originality here. However, if there's one thing that's been proven time and again since the dawn of music, it's that melody, when done right, can be endlessly milked from now until eternity without getting old. "His Creation Reversed" is chock full of melody, with not a loser in the bunch, and in fact "Teloah" is a downright classic. "Teloah" runs on the longest of the nine tracks, but in the old days of vinyl and cassette the artistic move was to relegate the middle of the album to transitionary songs, a sort of musical intermission, and that's exactly what's achieved here. Havayoth have a way of combining atmosphere with actual songs that initially makes you think they're a bit more brilliant than they probably are, but it's worth it for that initial breathless first impression.
