This would have made a more apt score for German-expressionist film classic Metropolis than the mess Georgio Morodor came up with some years back. Best-known for deconstructing "Sympathy for the Devil," these mad Slovanians use eerie samples and bleak beats to sum up end-of-the-millenium alienation. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
This is one of the most unique records ever period!!!!.......2007-04-06
Laibach released this strange twisted take on techno and hiphop in 1992 and by a landslide this is their best work. Nothing you have ever heard can compare to this. It is the most unique cd in my collection and leaves people questioning themselves when they hear it. Either they are floored or dont know how to react. Take throbbing techno- metallic industrial and hip hop rythyms- eastern european orchestral arrangements- slavic and german deep voiced singing/talking and an array of samples and you have Kapital. Add some eerie haunting piano lines and sampled strings and well its competely its own entity. For fans of real leftfield hiphop techno or industrial this is a must own. If youre not familair with Laibach well i dont know how to convince you of their "art and politics" agenda- but this along with Nato and their new album Volk are must hears. Early LAibach was heavy orchestral industrial and later releases were hard guitar driven metal/ industrial but Kapital stands as one of the music industries real oddball classics!!!
Adventurous as always..........2006-09-22
Just about perfect...hence the 4 stars. Not to reiterate from other prior reviews, but this is one of the best Laibach releases. While it does not have the bombastic percussion of Macbeth, or the guitars of JC Superstars (that would come later of course) or many of Milan's vocals (as lead)...it does cover a lot of stylistic ground and posesses the trademark ominous Laibach sense of humor. Buy this and the DVD of their promotional videos, especially for the Wirtschaft ist Tot (The Economy is Dead) clip. One of the most artistic and beautifully realized vids ever. This could serve as an intro to the band, as could Let it Be, Wat or the Anthems compilation. You won't go wrong with any of these.
For fans of their techno side!.......2005-10-19
I consider myself a LAIBACH fan. I enjoy albums such as "Opus Dei", "Let It Be" and "WAT". I, however, think "Kapital" shows the band at a creative quandary. Forget the grandiose sounds of "Leben Heisst Leben" or the punishing electro beats of "Tanz Mit Laibach". Instead, we get a collection of what seems to be techno/house/experimental electronica music. LAIBACH was obviously putting us on with this EXTREMELY lame album. If you like repetetive and monotnous techno, then this is the album of your life. For those of you out there expecting something AT LEAST like "WAT" (industrial/techno) or "Opus Dei" (Industrial/Metal) then look somewhere else. If you don't believe me, just hear the samples that AMAZON offer. This is definitely NOT the LAIBACH I'm used to liking and I can only accept this recording as means of an experimental album, devoid of any commercial viability. If LAIBACH wanted to offend, they have mistakenly offended some of their fans by releasing this below par disc. Next please!
A good transitional work from an exceptional band. .......2005-07-16
Laibach is one of the more fascinating names making independent music throughout the past twenty years. The group's attitude, approach, and aesthetic consistently elevate its music beyond limitations of the medium, reaching the status of high art in both concept and craftsmanship. That said, I think that Kapital is a very enjoyable album but ultimately one of transition, and not one of their more potent statements.
Musically it breaks from the established Laibach template of harsh militant rhythms embellished with Wagnerian orchestral arrangements to introduce a softer more overtly electronic style. House-music rhythms, sampled breakbeats, and warm electronic pulses provide the foundation for most of the tracks. Unlike previous Laibach recordings, on which the sound could not be mistaken for anyone but Laibach, Kapital's sound is largely anonymous, sounding much like a handful of other techno/acid house groups working in the early nineties such as The KLF or 808 State.
This is not to say that Laibach has not put its own stamp on this sound. Heavy-handed orchestral flourishes, operatic female vocals, and cleverly arranged samples and found sounds still mold the infectious rhythms in to the rich politically charged art-rock that fans have come to expect from the group. But on Kapital these elements are so subtle and used so sparingly that one may not even pick up on them the first few listens. Also largely absent is the booming barked vocals that are a staple of the Laibach sound. This component really never surfaces in full force, though appears in a softer, more melodic form on "Hunter's Funeral Procession," and "Sponsored by Mars," among others. "Hymn to the Black Sun" even features rapping, which is really quite good but sounds very out of place on this record. The majority of the album though is instrumental, which with the exception of a few deliberate samples, leaves little room for the political satire that usually permeates Laibach's recordings.
From my criticisms it may sound like I am chastising the group for abandoning a successful formula. This is not the case, as it is great to hear the group evolve and experiment with new sounds and textures. However any time an artist takes on a new methodology, the sophistication of the work takes a few steps back to allow for adjustment and growth. The result is a pleasant, occasionally poignant collection of music that any fan of Laibach or techno music of the era will find necessary in their collection. For a more complete manifestation of Laibach, I would recommend Opus Dei, a culminating work of Laibach's earlier sound, or NATO, which would follow Kapital as a more mature and cohesive representation of the style born on Kapital.
