4 out of 5 stars Anyone Who Can't Appreciate This is Incapable of Appreciating Orchestrated Music.......2005-12-06

I'd like to start off by saying that the "A String Quartet Tribute To [Insert Influential Band Here]" series is a great one that will only make the owner of their favorite artists/bands grow fonder over time. Taking away the lyrics we all know by heart & playing the vocals through the pulsating vibrations of these strings strips the music down to its most beauteous form.

I was first intriduced to "A String Quartet Tribute To..." with Incubus, then I got the Radiohead tribute, then the Bowie, then Dylan, then both Zeppelin's, & most recently: Jimi Hendrix, & now...Bright Eyes. & this four-piece section has yet to let me down.

The series speaks for itself in its meticulous song selection & delicate (pre)arrangements of how this quartet goes about 'covering' such tracks in their purest form. I know there are those who are against such actions taken by these musicians, which is done out of respect on both ends I might add, (by that I mean those who bitch in an attempt to stay true to the original, while the string quartet obviously loves thier music enough to play it), but it really comes down to the bland fact that whether the lyrics aren't there, or that drum solo you love, or they just can't hit that note/chord like an acoustic guitar can...it's still just a matter of tastetasical opinion. You may like it, you may not, but for the lucky ones, myself included, you'll love it.

It seems to me, that anyone, (especially fans of whatever band this brilliant series chooses to take under their deliciously composed scrutiny), who can't appreciate this series is incapable of appreciating orchestrated music.

Go buy yourself some Bach (or Beethoven), & come back to this in a couple seasons. You may just find this's just as beautiful as the original compositions.

I was listening to "The Calendar Hung Itself." I thought, "Man, this really, REALLY sounds like 'We Are Nowhere, And It's Now."

I assumed it was just my CD. After all, I was given it as a gift, so beggars can't be choosers. However, upon visiting Amazon and listening to the track samples, THERE IS NO "THE CALENDAR HUNG ITSELF."

If you're reading this, you obviously have been affected by Conor Oberst's music because who else would care that they've made a string quartet tribute in his name? It's quite easy to become absorbed in his image, his scene, and his name to the point that you want to collect all of the music he has ever put out. Conor Oberst should be viewed as a person who had to tell about his thoughts and sufferings and has been able to craft them in beautiful lyrics and imagery. This string quartet is making a mockery of all that he has worked so hard for and so anyone that buys this cd hasn't really been touched or had a real connection with his music. Besides, the arrangements are less than interesting and doesn't even come close to what classical music should be. The string quartet is even putting a crying man on the cover, so they obviously think that Conor doesn't go deeper than depression in his music. I feel sorry for anyone who has collected all his cd's just for his names sake or for your own self-gratification. If you go as far as to purchase this album, you are not only an embarrassment to bright eyes fans, but an embarrassment to yourself!
