+1/2 -- Stellar contemporary rockabilly-pop ala Everlys, Bobby Fuller.......2006-01-03
The Everly Brothers' singing has been a primary source for a lot of modern harmony duos, but the Sprague Brothers' combination of Everly styled harmonies, Buddy Holly West Texas twang and vintage 1960s Bobby Fuller surf-and-drag is one of the most unique takes yet. Their music has the rhythmic kick of rockabilly, the Beatlesque melodies of sunshine rock, and the chiming guitars of power pop.
This 1999 debut isn't nearly as gimmicky as the cover might suggest. Their guitar-and-drums duets may play just fine on the hipster lounge circuit, but for their LP they recruited notable friends to fill out their sound, including Randy Fuller, Brian "Shorty" Poole, and Deke Dickerson as bass players, and Jeremy Wakefield on pedal steel. Their original music is incredibly catchy and accessible, and so hypnotizingly catchy that you'd barely notice "Never Knew" and "I'm Ready" are covers (of Bob Wills and Fats Domino, respectively).
How they continue to fly so far below the radar, despite exposure on NPR and in the pages of Rolling Stone, Playboy and other cultural outlets, is anyone's guess. Get this CD and breakout your own epidemic of Spraguemania! 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
I love these guys.......2004-12-14
I own 4 cd's of these guys.
They remind me of 60's surf guitars,Everly Brothers,Buddy Holly.
They could have recorded this stuff 40 years ago or 40 days ago.
You can't tell..
Gawd,did I say 40 years ago??
It seems like only yesterday I was surfin at Seal Beach and listening to KRLA and KFWB in Long Beach.
Where on earth did it go??
The 50's and 60's are my favorite music era..
And these guys take you right back there.
Garage band, studio, live,it sounds like all three.
I highly reccomend these guys.
Get all their cd's..
Merseybeat is a fantastic cd by them.
It sounds like a cd from 40 years ago with a Liverpool sound..
Beatles,baybee..can you believe it ?
One minute you are surfin with them, the next you are down in the cavern in Liverpool.
Please, buy their cd's if anything I just said sounds familiar to you.
Great modern day rockabilly.......2002-02-18
The Sprague brothers specialize in the type of music I didn't think they made anymore-Everly brothers type rock'n roll.Get this C.D. if you have any love for real rock' roll, not the garbage that gets played on the radio.
ABSOLUTELY ROCKIN' - THE BEST!.......1999-11-10
And Deke Dickerson on backup guitar (YEAH - THESE GUYS ARE THAT GOOD!) I heard them on CBS Saturday Morning News and went right out and bought this. I play this album every day - can't wait for their next release!
