Sessions With Suzanne.......2000-11-23
Talking along the lines of a song-by-song basis, I think that she clearly improves upon four of the seven songs included here: "World Before Columbus", "Caramel", "Cracking", and "Marlene on the Wall". Less instrumentation is present on these (and the other three) songs as opposed to the studio versions, and that allows Vega's voice to really enter into the spotlight where it deserves to remain; she's no powerhouse vocalist nor does she have an astonishing range, but the uniqueness and quality and the visceral effect of her raspy voice are all appealing. Also, a good bit of the reason that she has improved upon a majority of these songs is that she has become a much better singer in the 12 or 13 years that have passed since some of these tracks (including "Cracking", "Small Blue Thing", and "Marlene on the Wall") appeared on her eponymous debut. Now, Vega has a much more mature, full voice and it can really help with her delivery.
Simply put, I didn't find "Small Blue Thing" an improvement, nor "Gypsy" - which was already a masterpiece and could hardly be improved upon. The version of "Luka" here is really too different from her #3 hit to compare (I think that the lack of instrumentation here, thus making it more folksy and not like a rock hit which it sort of was, anyway, is more of a lateral and situational move).
Really, though, to more strongly communicate how wonderful this live album is. Despite the fact that I have all of these songs on her various albums, I was more than willing to pay the over $20 plus shipping for this seven-song import. The intimacy, the delicacy and the artistry of this effort will not disappoint those with taste.
A must have for Suzanne Vega Fans!.......2000-01-08
The most caring CD from Suzanne Vega.......1999-04-08
Stark, personal and intimate - quintessentially Suzanne Vega.......1998-10-08
A few of my fave picks:
Gypsy - This version of "Gypsy" became one of my instant favorites. So clean and precise - a perfect story perfectly told.
Caramel - Sweet and tasteful as usual and there is also a grimness about it which I love in this version.
